Abstract

The deworming program conducted by pharmacists in the working area of Sidomulyo Public Health Center in 2024 represents a strategic public health intervention aimed at reducing the burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections among children aged 1 to 12 years. Implemented across five urban villages and involving 26 educational institutions—including Posyandu, early childhood centers, and elementary schools—the program successfully reached 100% coverage, administering treatment to all 5,167 targeted children. Pharmacists played a central role throughout the initiative, not only ensuring accurate dosing and safe drug administration but also delivering health education, monitoring for adverse effects, and maintaining detailed records. Their direct involvement enhanced the quality and accountability of the intervention, while also fostering greater awareness of hygiene and preventive practices among students, teachers, and caregivers. Aligned with Indonesia’s Ministry of Health Regulation No. 15 of 2017 on helminthiasis control, this initiative contributes meaningfully to national goals for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) elimination, improved child nutrition, and the strengthening of primary healthcare services. The program’s integrated, school-based approach—anchored by pharmaceutical expertise—offers a replicable model for other regions seeking to advance child health outcomes through community-centered, multisectoral collaboration.

Abstract

The role of pharmacists in community health centers has a major impact on the provision of primary health services. This discussion explores the significance of pharmacists' contributions to patients, health workers, and the national health system. Pharmacists not only administer medications, but also play a key role in disease prevention, patient education, and collaboration with the healthcare team. However, there are factors that can hinder the role of pharmacists, including limited resources, complex regulations, and public perception. Public awareness, simpler regulations, and efficient resource management are the keys to optimizing the contribution of pharmacists in community health centers. In an effort to achieve quality primary health services, interprofessional collaboration and professional development of pharmacists are needed. The conclusion of this discussion emphasizes the importance of increasing the role of pharmacists as integral health agents, who not only focus on aspects of treatment, but also on preventing disease and improving overall public health. Thus, increasing the role of pharmacists in community health centers is expected to contribute significantly to efforts to provide holistic and affordable health services.

Abstract

Pharmacists are an important element of health service systems, and there is a significant role in ensuring safe, effective, and rational use of drugs. This system of pharmacy practice continues to develop (as does the national health system) in Indonesia through a framework of laws and regulations. The purpose of this research is to analyze the legal status of pharmacist as a healthcare professional in accordance with Indonesian legislation and the ratio legiss of pharmaceutical laws. This research used a normative juridical approach with literature studies based on legal documents, government regulations and other scientific publication related to the pharmacy practice. The analysis based on government regulations shows that pharmacists as health practitioners have a strong legal legitimacy by 5 (five) regulations in the context of professional practice only, licensing, pharmaceutical services and patient safety. With regard to pharmaceutical product management and clinical pharmacy services, these regulations highlight that they fall under the umbrella of pharmaceutical practice. The national health system has also seen recent regulatory reforms that further enhance legal protection of pharmaceutical professionals while providing an avenue for higher quality healthcare services. The evolution of pharmaceutical regulation is also paradigm for the movement in pharmacy practice from a product-oriented to a patient-centred model of pharmaceutical care. Thus, recognizing the regulatory framework and the legal reasoning underpinning these policies is important to enhance pharmacists' professionalism as well as to promote safe and effective healthcare systems in Indonesia.
