Abstract

This phenomenological research study aimed to explore the improvement of the numeracy skills of the grade one learners through the use of first language. The participants were composed of seventeen (14) informants. They had undergone individual in-depth interview. Based on their narrations, all of them experienced different teaching strategies to improve numeracy skills of learners. Findings revealed that participants experienced strenuous facilitation of necessary numeracy skills among grade one learners when first language of the so called mother tongue language was used, thus, teachers had to apply repeated delivery of instruction to ensure mastery of skills using first language as medium of instruction. Learners did not have the comprehensive understanding of the lesson to augment numeracy skill in grade one level, learners tend to become introverted and unsociable thus, unable to relate and communicate the skill. In this sense teachers have to redirect pedagogical strategies sticking to first language as medium of instruction. Innovative and inventive way of determining strategies has to be given a critical point in deliberately adopting constant practical work approaches so learners can fully engage with the competencies with respect to grade one Math contents.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the experiences of parents as para-teachers of their child’s education at home that would serve as basis to improve the delivery of primary education instruction. The participants were the ten parents of learners enrolled in a public elementary school, utilizing exploratory case study design to explore the experiences of the parents. A semi- structured interview guide was used to gather the data. Ethical considerations were observed in data collection. The themes were extracted using thematic content analysis. The findings were: time constraint, inattentive child, and unskillful parents are the challenges encountered by the participants; their coping mechanisms with the challenges encountered are strong partnerships are established, discipline is strongly implemented, different types of motivation are applied, initiative disposition is developed, and personal attributes are amplified; and strengthening of stakeholders’ partnership, capacitating parent’s basic instructional skills, and improving parental behavior management strategies are the insights derived from the experiences of the parents.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the level of awareness of parents on the K to 12 curriculums. The results of the investigation served as the basis for an intensive orientation scheme. This study utilized mean, t-tests for uncorrelated samples, and analysis of variance. The respondents of this study were the 150 parents of the Grade 1 pupils of Talomo District, Division of Davao City, for the School Year 2013-2014 who were chosen through purposive sampling technique. In the absence of standardized instruments, the researcher employed a researcher-made instrument in the form of a checklist with three options. The study revealed that the level of awareness of parents on the K to 12 curriculum is moderate. It is ascertained in this study that there is no significant difference in the level of awareness of parents on the K to 12 curriculums when analyzed by gender, family income, nature of work, and educational attainment. The null hypothesis, which stated that there is no significant difference in the level of awareness of parents on the K to 12 curriculums when analyzed by gender, family income, nature of work, and educational attainment, was accepted. In light of the findings of the study, an orientation scheme for parents on the K to 12 curriculum is proposed. It is recommended that schools continue to communicate to the community the innovations in the educational systems by holding fora in order to make the community aware of the programs, which can help in the implementation of the curriculum. The Department of Education (DepED) shall continue to monitor the orientation mechanism done by the schools on the implementation of the K to 12 curriculums. It is also endorsed to implement the orientation scheme on the K to 12 curriculums designed by the researcher. Further, it is recommended to conduct another study on the level of awareness of stakeholders on the K to 12, like the industries, local government units, and civil societies.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between teachers’ use of selected teaching approaches and students’ academic performance in English. Employing a quantitative design, data were analyzed using mean, t-test, and Pearson’s r. Results indicated a moderately extensive use of the selected approaches. However, student performance was low overall, with no significant difference by gender. A novel moderate correlation was established, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The primary contribution is the empirical evidence linking specific pedagogical strategies to student outcomes. A key practical implication is the need for targeted teacher training and retooling on effective methods like inquiry-based and analytical approaches. It is recommended that the Department of Education integrate such pedagogical training into its annual review programs to enhance instructional quality and student achievement.
