Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed various challenges for women and children, including increased cases of violence and difficulties in accessing legal services. Islamic family law plays a crucial role in protecting the rights of Muslims in this context. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic family law in safeguarding women and children in developing countries during the pandemic, while examining the impact of parents' legal knowledge on their children's well-being. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving semi-structured interviews and questionnaires distributed to 30-50 respondents, including women experiencing violence and legal activists. The findings indicate that approximately 70% of respondents are aware of their legal rights; however, many face barriers, including social stigma and complex legal procedures. Additionally, children from families with higher legal knowledge exhibit better well-being compared to those from families with lower legal knowledge. This study recommends better legal education and reforms in the legal system to enhance protections for women and children.

Abstract

Abstract

Parenting styles significantly influence child development, yet Muslim parents often struggle to balance Islamic disciplinary principles with compassionate child-rearing. This exploratory mixed-methods study examines how Islamic parenting styles integrate discipline and compassion, and their impact on child outcomes. Data was collected from 200 Muslim parents in Indonesia and Malaysia through surveys (adapted Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire) and in-depth interviews with 30 participants. Quantitative analysis revealed three dominant parenting styles: authoritative Islamic (62%), authoritarian (28%), and permissive (10%). The authoritative Islamic style showed the strongest positive correlations with children's emotional regulation (r = 0.53, p < 0.01), religiosity (M = 4.2/5), and parent-child communication (M = 4.5/5). Qualitative themes highlighted "Discipline with Mercy" through Qur'anic guidance and Prophetic examples, though cultural misinterpretations led some parents toward excessive strictness. Findings align with Keshavarzi and Haque's (2013) adab-based parenting model while challenging universal applications of Western parenting theories (Darling & Steinberg, 1993). The study underscores the effectiveness of Sunnah-inspired balanced parenting and identifies gaps in culturally adapted Islamic parenting education. Practical implications include developing faith-based parenting programs that integrate psychological insights with Islamic principles. Future research should employ longitudinal designs to assess long-term child outcomes across diverse Muslim communities.

Abstract

Background: Religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity presents a serious challenge in building social cohesion in an increasingly pluralistic global society. Islamic education, with a Muslim population of more than 1.8 billion people worldwide, has a strategic position as an agent of social transformation that has great potential in shaping an inclusive and harmonious character. Objective: This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic education in building social cohesion in diverse societies, identify effective institutional models, and develop conceptual models that can be operationalized by practitioners and policymakers. Methods: The study used the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with an integrative design referring to the PRISMA 2020 protocol, analyzing 47 selected scientific articles from the Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and DOAJ databases published between 2020–2025. Results: The study identified six mechanisms of Islamic education's contribution to social cohesion, including the transmission of inclusive values based on wasathiyyah and ukhuwwah, community social capital development, facilitation of dialogue and conflict resolution, economic empowerment, cultivation of moderate identity, and formation of intercultural competence. This research produces an integrative model of ICCD (Islamic Education–Community Cohesion Development) that systematically connects the foundations of Islamic education, supporting institutional factors, community development outcomes, and social cohesion indicators. Implications: These findings imply the need for multicultural value-based curriculum reforms, strengthening educators' intercultural competencies, and educational policies that explicitly integrate the goals of social cohesion in the development of Islamic educational institutions.
