Abstract

Children's literature entertains and imparts moral lessons, shaping young minds by fostering empathy and helping them navigate moral dilemmas. This study aims to explore the moral development of the child characters in Enid Blyton’s novel Five on a Hike Together by applying Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development. The objectives of the study are: (1) to analyze how the children’s thoughts and actions reflect stages of moral growth, (2) to assess the influence of friendship and cooperation as catalysts for their development. This research is conducted using qualitative methods through close reading and textual analysis, focusing on dialogue, narrative progression, and character interaction. The findings reveal that the characters experience a range of moral dilemmas that encourage them to progress from obedience-based reasoning to more autonomous and principle-based judgments. The analysis shows that both Piaget’s and Kohlberg’s frameworks are effective in tracing the characters’ evolving sense of right and wrong, particularly as they respond to danger, trust, and responsibility. Ultimately, the study highlights how Five on a Hike Together offers a nuanced portrayal of moral growth in childhood through adventure and friendship.

Abstract

Literary translation transcends the boundaries of a mere translation discipline and assumes the profound responsibility of preserving narratives that serve as foundational elements of human civilization. Combining the skills of translation with the artistry of creative writing, literary translation surpasses the conventional expectations of a translator. A literary translator bears the weighty task of not only conveying the message and meaning of a translated work but also encapsulating its aesthetic essence. This scholarly article delves into anexploration of five primary challenges encountered in the realm of literary translation, alongside an examination of fidelity as the fundamental principle governing the translation of literary works. It is crucial toacknowledge that the notion of an ideal and flawless literary translation, and consequently an ideal literary translator, remains elusive. Rather, the pinnacle of literary translation lies in the production of a translationthat progressively approximates the intended meaning and form of the original work. Abstract

This article explores the importance of identifying texts that help a beginner translator improve his/her skills through practice. First, it will define what a beginner translator is and, secondly, what characteristics a text should have to be used as a practice text. The study finds that a beginner translator, characterized by his/her lack of knowledge and skills in translating due to insufficient experience, often faces language and cultural challenges, leading to unnatural translations. To address these issues, practicing with well-suited texts is crucial. Using an online survey distributed to HPI (Association of Indonesian Translators) members, the article identifies five key text characteristics for beginners: grammatical accuracy, low complexity, minimal idiomatic and archaic language, relevance to the translator's field of study, and manageable length (150-200 words or 5-20 pages). To those findings, the study adds that a beginner translator should understand his/her own learning styles to optimize their practice and skill development.
