Abstract

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a pathological condition due to backflow from the stomach into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation. Risk factors for GERD are mostly related to a person's lifestyle such as obesity, diet, smoking and stress. One group of individuals who have a high risk is students of the Faculty of Medicine in terms of a series of study loads that make students unable to maintain a good lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and characteristics of Pattimura University Faculty of Medicine students who experience GERD based on the GERD-Q score. This research is a quantitative research with categorical descriptive study using cross sectional approach. The results showed that the prevalence of GERD was 40 people (15.2%) out of a total of 264 respondents. The majority were female 31 people (11.7%). The highest age was 18 years old, 16 people (6.1%). The most common symptom of GERD is regurgitation as many as 40 people (8.5%). The highest BMI in the normal group was 16 people (6.1%). The conclusion of this study showed that the prevalence of GERD in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Pattimura University was 40 people with the main complaint of regurgitation and the characteristics of respondents with GERD were mostly at the age of 18 years, female, and normal BMI group.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Digital Eye Strain, Pemeriksaan Visus, Edukasi, Remaja  ABSTRACT The rapid development of digital technology has led teenagers to use electronic devices more frequently, increasing the risk of digital eye strain (DES) and visual disturbances. This study aims to enhance adolescents’ knowledge about DES prevention and to enable early detection of visual impairments through vision screening. The activity was conducted at SMK Negeri 2 Ambon on September 10, 2025, involving 84 students aged 14–17 years. The methods included health education through interactive presentations, group discussions, and leaflet distribution, combined with vision screening using a Snellen chart. The results showed an improvement in students understanding of the symptoms, causes, and preventive measures of DES, including the application of the 20-20-20 rule and maintaining a safe viewing distance from screens. Vision screening revealed that 21 students experienced decreased visual acuity, particularly difficulty seeing at a distance (myopia), which had not previously been examined at health facilities. Health education combined with vision screening proved effective not only in raising awareness but also in detecting refractive disorders at an early stage. In conclusion, face-to-face eye health education accompanied by vision screening is a comprehensive strategy to prevent the long-term impacts of digital device use among adolescents. The role of schools and parents is crucial in following up the screening results, supervising gadget use, and encouraging further eye examinations at healthcare facilities. Keywords: Digital Eye Strain, Visual Acuity Examination, Education, Adolescents
