Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the strategies of young entrepreneurs in the marine tourism industry on Derawan Island in facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study employs a qualitative approach using purposive and snowball sampling techniques for informant selection. Data collection was carried out through interviews and field observations. The research applies James C. Scott’s survival strategy theory to analyze the phenomena under investigation. The results of the study indicate that young entrepreneurs in the marine tourism sector on Derawan Island were a vulnerable group during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address these challenges, the young entrepreneurs engaged in several survival strategies, including returning to fishing and adjusting the pricing of tourism packages during the new normal period.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the use of pusako tinggi to finance children's education in Nagari Salingka Muaro, West Pasaman Regency. Pusako tinggi is an inherited asset from the female side that cannot be sold without the community's consent, because it serves not only as an economic asset but also as a symbol of the family's social continuity. However, in modern society, pusako tinggi is often used or even sold to meet urgent needs, including education. This study uses a qualitative, descriptive approach. The theory used is Herbert Spencer's theory of social change. Informants were purposively selected, and data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The unit of analysis was clans that sold high pusako for their children's education. Data analysis employed Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that the use of high-purpose savings accounts supported family life, particularly for children's education expenses. This reflects that Minangkabau customs prioritise education, as children are seen as inheritors of family dignity and continuity. However, the practice of utilising high-pusako for education often creates internal dilemmas and conflicts, given its communal rather than private ownership.

Abstract

This study examines the conflict between child workers involved in pamutia brondol sawit (loose oil palm fruit collectors) and oil palm plantation landowners in Jorong Kampung Kajai, Pasaman Regency. The conflict arises within a community whose economy largely depends on the plantation sector, where the activity of collecting loose palm fruits—initially permitted—has developed into violations such as harvesting fresh fruit bunches directly from trees, hiding harvested bunches, and taking loose fruits already collected by landowners. This research aims to identify the factors causing the conflict and to analyze the forms of conflict resolution carried out by the local community. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The theoretical framework is based on Randall Collins’ conflict theory, which emphasizes competition over material resources as a trigger of social conflict. The findings reveal that the conflict is driven by economic pressures, the increasing number of children involved as collectors, and weak social control. The forms of conflict include both open and latent conflicts, some of which have led to acts of violence. Conflict resolution is conducted through customary deliberation and the imposition of fines as a local wisdom–based mechanism. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening the roles of families, customary institutions, and village authorities in preventing economically driven social conflicts at the local level.
