Abstract

Background: Ankle injury is a common condition experienced by individuals who have high activity or in individuals who exercise. This condition causes pain, swelling, instability, muscle weakness, postural control deficits, and balance disorders. Efforts to improve dynamic balance include providing ankle support that increases proprioception for the user. Purpose of the study: to determine the effectiveness of using ankle support on dynamic balance in nonprofessional futsal players with ankle injuries. Research method: using quantitative quasi experiment, one group pretest posttest design with a total of 25 subjects of nonprofessional futsal players who experienced injuries. Analysis of this research data using the Wilcoxon test The results of the hypothesis test showed a p value of 0.000 and the value <0.05, meaning that there is an effectiveness in providing ankle support to improve dynamic balance in nonprofessional futsal players with ankle injuries. Conclusion: ankle support is effective in improving balance for nonprofessional futsal players with ankle injuries.

Abstract

Background: The foot plays a vital role in supporting body weight and enabling locomotion. Improper foot care and footwear can lead to musculoskeletal disorders such as pain. One common condition is hallux valgus, a lateral deviation of the big toe that causes progressive pain and impairs joint function. Teachers, particularly those in vocational high schools, are at higher risk due to prolonged standing and the use of formal footwear. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship and strength of association between the hallux valgus angle and pain intensity among public vocational high school teachers in Surakarta. Methods: A quantitative, observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The hallux valgus angle was measured using amplification angulus, and pain intensity was assessed. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between the hallux valgus angle and pain intensity. For the right foot, the p-value was 0.028 with a correlation coefficient of 0.401 (moderate). For the left foot, the p-value was 0.038 with a correlation coefficient of 0.380 (low). Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between the hallux valgus angle and pain intensity among teachers, with moderate correlation on the right foot and low correlation on the left foot

Abstract

Background: Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs) are widely used to improve gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP), yet their effects are multidimensional and vary across functional, independence, and user-centered domains. This study synthesizes clinical outcomes from a diverse CP cohort to inform an integrated, evidence-based approach to AFO prescription. Methods: We conducted a descriptive observational analysis of 40 children with CP using AFOs. Measurements included GMFCS-based functional status, independence with PEDI-2, and comfort/satisfaction with QUEST. Normality was assessed with the Shapiro–Wilk test. Group comparisons between rigid and jointed AFO designs were analyzed with the Mann–Whitney U test; effect sizes were reported as r. Regression analyses identified predictors of independence and comfort. An integrated outcome framework and clinical decision algorithm were developed to guide prescription. Results: The sample (mean age 7.80 ± 4.42 years; mean AFO use 4.56 ± 4.09 years) showed multidimensional effects of AFO design. Rigid AFOs yielded higher GMFCS scores (functional benefit) and a clustering of higher-function outcomes, whereas jointed AFOs achieved greater comfort (QUEST: r ? 0.34) and a broader distribution of satisfaction. Independence (PEDI-2) did not differ significantly by AFO type (p = 0.283; r = 0.17), indicating multifactorial determinants beyond device design. Regression indicated age as a strong predictor of independence, and AFO design as a key predictor of comfort. An integrated framework mapped rigid AFO to function, jointed AFO to comfort/independence, and highlighted the role of wear-time in real-world effectiveness. Conclusion: AFO effectiveness in CP is multidimensional; rigid designs may enhance functional stability while jointed designs improve comfort and potential adherence, influencing participation. An individualized, goal-directed prescription that balances biomechanical control with user-centered outcomes is essential for optimizing short-term performance and long-term participation.
