Abstract

Institutional and community participation is an important aspect being the main pillar in the implementation of the rehabilitation of mangroves. There is rarely any failure in the mangrove rehabilitation because it is not supported by the institutional role to its full potential. This research aimed to inventory the role of institutions and community participation in mangrove conservation in the coastal zone, Tiwoho Village, North Sulawesi Province. Selection of study areas and respondents done by purposive sampling. Data colected by field observation and structured interview with key respondents by using the snawball method. Research showed that some institutions has a major contribution in initiating mangrove conservation in Tiwoho are public figures, village government, NGOs, religious institutions, institutions of formal education, and foreign researcher. The form of community participation in conserving mangrove among others are not cut down of mangrove wood for any reason planting seeds every oportunity and keep mangrove from other community disturbances. Several method of management are expected to be inspiration for stakeholders to be able developed a mangrove forest management system in different place which have similar characteristics.

Abstract

Aketajawe Lolobata National Park (TNAL) is a protected area for paradise birds, parrots and others North Maluku endemic wildlife. As a former of commercial logging concessions, this areas have been damaged and loss of wildlife habitat. The purpose of this research was to determine bird species of TNAL area based on zone category, this research is important in order to validate data related to the birds species diversity. Data collection used the observation point system with purposive sampling by direct observation and audio. The number of observation points were six points in core zone, ten points in both of jungle and traditional zone, and six points in buffer zone. Research showed that there are 39 species found in the buffer zone, 45 species in jungle and traditional zone, and 19 species in core zone. Wallace’s standardwing (Semioptera wallacei) is one of the 15 endemic species of North Maluku was found along drummer rail (Habroptila wallacii) which is Halmahera’s endemic species. Distribution pattern of birds in TNAL is very varied. The jungle and traditional zone have the amount and the highest species diversity while the highest species variation was in the buffer zone. The natural habitat of bird in this area generally located in open area along former road skid as well as forest edge and only a few were found in primary forest of core zone.

Abstract

Nickel mining impact in heavy metal pollution on both soil and water. A method that is widely applied to reduce heavy metal contamination is bioremediation. Selection of bacteria that have potential reduction of heavy metal contamination in soil is very important in bioremediation process. The first step to select the potential bacteria is identification of samples. The purpose of this study is to identify existings bacteria in pond after nickel mining area PT. Antam, East Halmahera. Methods used in this research are isolation and identification of bacteria by conventional methods includes morphological, physiologica,l and biochemical test. Identification using Bergey’s Manual Determinative. The results showed there are 6 genera types of bacteria there are Bacillus, Esherichia, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, dan Klebsiella, with 18 species in water of nickel post mining. Morphologically it is dominated by genus Bacillus as 50 % of the species. The identification of bacteria proved an existence of indigenous bacteria which is resistant to heavy metal stress.
