Abstract

The pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has driven significant advancements in global educational practices, particularly in the areas of numeracy and literacy. This study explores innovative teaching strategies designed to enhance these foundational skills, with a focus on their role in achieving SDG targets such as equitable access to quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The primary aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in diverse educational contexts worldwide. A systematic literature review was conducted, analyzing data sourced from the Scopus database, covering publications from 2014 to 2024. The review included a detailed examination of 68 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The methodology involved the use of bibliometric tools like VOSviewer for mapping research themes and identifying trends in the field. The analysis revealed three major thematic clusters, highlighting the critical roles of numeracy, literacy, and their integration in educational strategies. The results indicate substantial improvements in student learning outcomes, critical thinking skills, and overall educational quality through the application of innovative teaching strategies in numeracy and literacy. These findings underscore the necessity of a holistic approach to education, integrating multiple competencies to effectively address the educational needs identified in SDG 4. The study concludes that the continued refinement and implementation of these strategies are crucial for advancing global educational objectives aligned with sustainable development. This research contributes valuable insights into the design and sustainability of educational policies and practices, offering a pathway to achieving broader educational and societal goals.

Abstract

The community service carried out by the YSI MORSE FKIK UMY team was motivated by the high prevalence of degenerative diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes mellitus, among the elderly population in Indonesia, including in Padukuhan Kweni and Padukuhan Garon. The problems found in the field show that older adults tend to rely on pharmacological treatment without accompanying changes in health behavior, while the use of non-pharmacological therapies based on local potential is still limited. On the other hand, the Panggungharjo area has the potential for butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) plants, which have so far been used more as ornamental plants, even though the elderly show an interest in herbal medicine. This community service activity aims to determine the effectiveness of butterfly pea flower tea consumption as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention in controlling blood pressure and random blood sugar (RBS) levels in the elderly. The method used was quasi-experimental with a one group pretest–posttest design conducted within the framework of community service with a community based intervention approach. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling techniques involving elderly people with hypertension in Padukuhan Kweni and elderly people with diabetes mellitus in Padukuhan Garon. The intervention consisted of providing butterfly pea flower tea during 10 meetings from August 28 to October 5, 2025, with a frequency of twice a week and a recommendation to consume butterfly pea flower tea once a day. The results showed a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure from an average of 152.75 mmHg to 149.00 mmHg (p = 0.008) and diastolic blood pressure from 85.42 mmHg to 77.67 mmHg (p = 0.041). In the diabetes mellitus group, the average RBS level decreased from 229.53 mg/dL to 195.57 mg/dL, but statistically, this change was not significant (p = 0.807). Based on these results, it can be concluded that consumption of butterfly pea flower tea is effective as a complementary therapy in controlling hypertension in the elderly. However, a longer intervention duration and dietary control are needed to achieve more optimal results in controlling blood sugar levels.
