Abstract

This study examines the meaning of fasād as a cosmic sign through Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach from an eco-theological interpretive perspective. The term fasād in the Qur’an does not merely refer to moral degradation but is also interpreted as an indication of massive ecological damage resulting from anthropogenic actions, by applying Peirce’s triad of representamen, object, and interpretant. It identifies the term fasād and the phenomenon of the environmental crisis as the representamen, links them to the empirical reality of environmental degradation as the object, and ultimately produces an interpretant in the form of a transformative eco-theological interpretation. This study analyzes contemporary environmental crisis phenomena such as global warming, clean water scarcity, air pollution, and the forest fires currently occurring in Indonesia as an interconnected system of signs. Through an eco-theological lens, these signs are interpreted as warnings of the loss of natural balance (mīzān) and the neglect of humanity’s stewardship as khalīfah. The research findings indicate that fasād constitutes a cosmic semiosis representing the logical consequences of exploitative behavior. This study concludes that a reorientation of Qur’anic interpretation is essential to better address the ecological crisis and foster a transcendental awareness in environmental conservation. This research offers a theoretical contribution to the development of an environmental theology grounded in a semiotic analysis that is more relevant to the ecological crisis.
