Abstract

Introduction: Tooth brushing is an act of dental and oral health care that is most performed by the community. The function of brushing teeth is to control plaque so as not to cause dental and oral diseases, namely caries and gingivitis. People often do practical things, namely by using an electric toothbrush, where the toothbrush is not yet known how effective it is in removing dental plaque. Purpose: to find out the differences in the effectiveness of U-Shape electric toothbrushes and conventional toothbrushes in cleaning dental plaque. Methods: This literature study uses the narrative review method. Journals and references were collected through the BMC Oral Health, PubMed and Google Scholar online databases and websites which were selected selectively and in accordance with this literature study. Conclusion: The use of a U-Shaped toothbrush shows results that are not effective in removing plaque and is equivalent to not brushing your teeth at all and brushing your teeth using a conventional toothbrush is also still better at removing plaque

Abstract

Background: One of the prevention for Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is maintain daily food through limiting cariogenik food’s consumption, controlling eating frequency, improving oral and dental health. Dental caries would be prevented by controlling eating frequency, improving oral and dental health, so pH plaque can also be controlled. Purpose: Analyze the relationship between the pH plaque to ECC occurrence in an endemic area of malnutrition status. Materials and Methods: Cross section study on 287 children aged 6-48 months in an endemic area of malnutrition in the district Neglasari, Tangerang city in 2013, interviewing the mother, and intraoral examination in children, multistage cluster random sampling method. Result: ECC highest proportion found in plaque pH from 6.0 to 6.4 as much as 79.2% with a value of p = 0.000 (p<0.05) and is one of the better predictors of the occurrence of ECC. Conclusions: There isa significant relationship between pH plaque to ECC occurrence, this variableis accordant with the prevention of ECC because itis included inthe model predictors of ECC.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of dental caries among children remains high. This condition may well be linked to improper dietary habits, society behavior and children’s frequent consumption of cariogenic foods that cause dental caries. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to find the relevance of dietary habits towards the occurrence of dental caries among kindergarten aged children and is used as a point of reference for UKGS (School Dental Health Service) on early prevention program of tooth decay. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study of 130 children was carried out in three kindergartens within UPDM (B) Dentistry area. Clinical examination on children, questionnaire, parents’ interview and purposive sampling technique were undertaken. Employing chi square test by using a dependent variable of caries in children and independent variables such as: age (p=0.000), gender (p=0.035), plaque pH (p=0.007), type of foods (p=0.012), frequency of eating (p=0.000), meals (p=0.000), parent education (p=0.174) and family income (0.835). Result: It is evident that there is a significant link between age, gender, pH plaque, food types, number of meals, meals time with caries. Caries prevalence was 78. 5%, def-t at 6.09.
