Abstract

This study explores the concept of friendship from the perspective of Wahbah Az-Zuhaili as presented in Tafsir al-Munīr. According to Az-Zuhaili, friendship is not merely a social relationship but a bond that carries spiritual, moral, and religious responsibilities. Based on his interpretation of several Qur’anic verses, including Surah Az-Zukhruf [43]:67, Al-Furqan [25]:28–29, Al-‘Ashr [103]:3, and Al-Hujurat [49]:10, he asserts that true friendship is grounded in faith, piety, and love for Allah (al-ḥubb fī Allāh), and thus yields benefits both in this world and the hereafter. Conversely, friendships based on worldly interests or values that contradict divine guidance lead only to regret and enmity on the Day of Judgment. Az-Zuhaili emphasizes the crucial role of selectivity in choosing companions as a means to preserve and strengthen one’s faith and moral character. Furthermore, he highlights the social function of friendship in Islam as a medium for mutual counsel in truth and patience, and as a force that reinforces Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah). Accordingly, Az-Zuhaili’s concept of friendship integrates both vertical (ḥablun minallāh) and horizontal (ḥablun minannās) dimensions, making it a vital component in the construction of a balanced, caring, and hereafter-oriented Islamic society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the interpretations of Qur’anic verses related to the phenomenon of flexing, namely ostentatious behavior motivated by the desire to gain praise and recognition from others, as discussed in Tafsir al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir al-Maraghi by Ahmad Musthafa al-Maraghi. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The research data consist of selected Qur’anic verses containing moral values and messages related to ostentation, riya’, ujub, and arrogance, which were selected selectively based on the mapping of relevant verses in Mu‘jam al-Alam wa al-Maudhu‘at fi al-Qur’an al-Karim. Data were collected through documentation techniques by examining primary sources in the form of Tafsir al-Misbah and Tafsir al-Maraghi, as well as secondary sources such as scholarly journals, books, and other academic works. Data analysis was conducted using a comparative (muqāran) tafsir approach by comparing the interpretations of the two exegetes regarding verses related to the theme of flexing. The findings indicate that both exegetes agree in viewing flexing as a reprehensible act that undermines sincerity and diminishes the spiritual value of deeds. However, differences arise in their interpretive emphases: M. Quraish Shihab tends to highlight the social and psychological dimensions, whereas Ahmad Musthafa al-Maraghi emphasizes moral, rational, and linguistic aspects
