Abstract

This article analyzes the concerns, roots, and challenges to Sumbawa culture, aiming to inform decisions in designing halal tourism policy in Sumbawa and West Sumbawa Regencies. The theories underpinning this study are that of culture, cultural approaches in foreign language teaching, and halal tourism. The data for analysis come from documentation and observation. The results and discussion show that the present state of Sumbawa culture is at risk of loss or distortion unless its revitalization is committed. The cultural roots identified and analyzed are the ancestors’ cultures, historical Islamic cultures, and prominent values in social interaction by Sumbawa people. A future challenge to Sumbawa culture lies in the handing down of cultural values by ensuring the fulfilment of the people’s right to quality education at all education channels,  accomodating the rooted cultural values into the educational content, and implementing halal tourism as a means of socialization among Sumbawa people and with guests from other regions or overseas.

Abstract

This study examines the content of constructivist learning paradigms in the textbook and students' understanding of the Introduction to Education course. Data collection methods are the textbook, student answer documentation, focused review session and assignment of student resume. The textbook analysis found five substances of constructivist learning paradigm, namely the nature of human, lifelong education, learning independence, the role of information technology, and the integration of educational benchmarks, which are parts of the textbook chapters. Analysis of the answers to the tasks, quizzes and student exams indicates that the students' understanding of the substance of this material is still medium or partial but has increased significantly after a focused review session was held, i.e. 75% or more students have a good and complete understanding. From the results of this study, it is suggested that (1) the textbook of Introduction to Education is rewritten, to put the five substances of constructivist learning paradigm as separate chapters so as to obtain their broader and deeper study portion; and (2) the materials not yet understood well by the students should be reviewed through a focused review session.

Abstract

This article reports on teacher trainees’ ability in doing a critical analysis of an extract of English teaching materials from a gender perspective. The critical ability was prompted using a textbook extract that generated two gender issues, namely woman-man relationship and the position of women in occupational discourse. The participants were 38 trainees enrolled in textbook analysis subject in the English Department of a college in regional Indonesia. The research data were the trainees’ results of the mid-term test, designed with explicit instruction to ascertain the afore-mentioned critical elements, and their results of the final exam with implied instruction to discern the same critical elements. The data were analysed qualitatively by interpreting the participants’ responses based on their degree of criticality. The mid-term test results show that more than half of them were critical about woman-man relationship, while only 18% were critical about women position at work. The trainees’ results in the final test demonstrate a significant downturn of their critical thinking performances. Only 15% criticized woman-man relationship and 13% problematized women position at work. These findings raise concerns about the trainees’ level of criticality and so systematic efforts to sharpen trainees’ critical analytical ability should be further attempted.

Abstract

This mixed-methods study investigates implementing a blended grammar instruction model that integrates LMS-based formative quizzes and student-led peer presentations within a lesson study framework in an Indonesian teacher education context. Drawing on mastery learning, sociocultural theory, and cognitive load principles, the study examines how this approach impacts student grammar mastery, perceptions, and instructor workload. The research employed quantitative analysis of student academic scores and Likert-scale survey data alongside qualitative insights from open-ended student reflections and instructor logs to enable triangulation of findings. Participants included 12 pre-service English teachers and three instructors in a semester-long Advanced English Structure course. Results show substantial gains in grammar performance, especially on cumulative assessments, and high student engagement with both LMS and peer learning components. Students valued repeated quiz practice, structured feedback, and collaborative presentations. Instructors reported reduced grading fatigue and increased pedagogical focus through LMS automation and team-based lesson study. Despite minor challenges in digital access and learner consistency, the model proved pedagogically effective and operationally sustainable. Findings affirm blended grammar instruction's relevance for enhancing student learning and instructional resilience in resource-constrained EFL settings.

Abstract

This study explores how teacher identity is constructed and negotiated across generations in rural Indonesia through narrative inquiry and ethnographic engagement. Drawing on the stories of twelve senior teachers and twelve student teachers, the research reveals how professional identity is deeply rooted in moral values of pengabdian and community service, while continually redefined through changing educational contexts. The findings show that teaching remains a moral and relational vocation, yet increasingly mediated by technological adaptation and digital collaboration. Senior teachers exhibit digital resilience as they learn to integrate technology into pedagogical practices, while younger teachers demonstrate emerging forms of digital professional identity shaped by the use of online platforms, social media, and learning technologies. Generational differences in digital literacy and technological confidence highlight how identity formation now extends into digital spaces, where professional ethics meet technological innovation. By situating these narratives within the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework, the study identifies how cross-generational mentoring enables mutual learning—senior teachers offering pedagogical and moral guidance, and student teachers sharing digital expertise. This reciprocal dynamic forms a contextual TPACK model rooted in rural cultural realities. The study concludes that teacher identity is being reconstructed through intergenerational dialogue and digital transformation, offering new insights into professional development and policy design for rural teacher education.
