Abstract

Abstract Conventional methods often fail to actively engage students in painting lessons. As a result, students tend to have poor academic performance and low creativity. This study demonstrates that students' creativity and learning outcomes can be improved through the use of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the PjBL model on students’ creativity and learning achievement in painting lessons at SMPN 2 Tempel, Yogyakarta. Research methodology was conducted using a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto design. The experimental and control groups consisted of eighth-grade students. Data were collected through documentation, interviews, observation, and analysis of students' art portfolios. The results indicate that the use of PjBL not only helps students achieve better academic performance but also encourages them to be more creative, to perceive the world through a visual lens, and to actively participate in the artistic process. These findings suggest that the project-based learning model can be considered an effective instructional approach that supports the objectives of the Kurikulum Merdeka, particularly in enhancing students' understanding of cultural arts in a meaningful and contextual way.
