Abstract

To help the students to master English, Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Probolinggo provides additional activities named English Study Club. On tutors’ guidance, the activities range from reading to speaking. In the initial observations made by the practitioners, it was found that the study club has not yet had a learning activity plan for each meeting, for both reading, nor speaking. It was also found that participants in the club were less enthusiastic in joining speaking activities class. This happened because they were lack of ideas to convey in the speaking session. This community service aims to provide training to tutors at the study club so that they can create an enthusiastic class. The activities in question are reading activities through mastering stories in short stories which can then be used as topics in discussion activities in speaking class. For this reason, this service focuses on training tutors to prepare reading comprehension learning activities using short stories as pre-activities in speaking classes. The expected outcome is that the tutors can overcome the boredom experienced by the English study club participants. Gladly, this aim is on its path of materialization.

Abstract

Since the proclamation of its independence until today, Indonesia has experienced civil conflicts. There are hundreds of civil conflicts that have the potential to become civil wars with very painful impacts.  By taking lessons from the novel, it is hoped that the root of the problem that triggers conflict can be eliminated, and through the novel we can also learn the lesson that arbitrariness will definitely be met with resistance. Through a discourse analysis using an inter-textual analysis approach, this research is intended to reveal how a civil conflict occurs, in this case the conflict in the novel "Di KAKI BUKIT CIBALAK" by Ahmad Tohari, and how resistance by the community is raised and carried out to defeat arbitrariness that happened.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how to use role play in teaching speaking in grade V students at Islamic Elementary School Raudhlatus Shibyan. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study type of research. The subjects of the study were English teacher and grade V students who participated in speaking learning activities using the role play method. The researcher collected data through three main instruments, namely interviews with English teachers, observation of the learning process in the classroom, and documentation in the form of teaching notes, photographs and student learning outcomes. After the data from interviews, observations, and documentation were collected, the researcher performed three main steps in analyzing them. First, data reduction was carried out, namely sorting out the information that had been collected through the results of teacher interviews, then selecting important parts related to the focus of the research. Second, data presentation is carried out, namely compiling important points of the data that have been selected earlier, so that the flow can be seen clearly. Finally, make a conclusion. With these steps, researchers can conclude that role play can indeed help students speak more boldly and be more active in learning English. The findings showed that role play is applied in three stages of learning: preparation, implementation, and evaluation.
