Abstract

This study aims to explore how the implementation of the Design Thinking approach can enhance students' critical thinking skills in learning three-dimensional geometry in Grade V at SDN Cipanas. The research was driven by initial observations showing that many students struggled to grasp mathematical concepts, particularly in solid shapes, due to learning methods that relied heavily on memorization and lacked opportunities for higher-order thinking. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through critical thinking tests and observation sheets that monitored student and teacher activities throughout the learning process. The findings revealed a steady improvement in students' critical thinking abilities. The average score increased from 49.6 in the pre-cycle phase to 66.7 in cycle I, and reached 81.2 by the end of cycle II. The percentage of students who met the minimum passing criteria rose significantly, from 10% in the pre-cycle to 86% in the final cycle. These results indicate that the Design Thinking approach fosters a more engaging and meaningful learning environment, encouraging students to think logically, creatively, and reflectively. Thus, this approach is recommended as an innovative teaching strategy to strengthen 21st-century skills in primary school mathematics education.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low understanding of science concepts among fourth-grade students at Tipar State Elementary School, Sukabumi Regency, which is caused by the teacher-centered learning process, which tends to make students passive. This study aims to improve students' understanding of science concepts through the application of experimental methods. The type of research used is Participant Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out collaboratively in two cycles. The research design used is the Kemmis and Mc Taggart model, which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 20 fourth-grade students at Tipar State Elementary School. Data collection techniques used performance tests (practice), observation, field notes, and documentation. The results of the study showed an increase in teacher activity from an average score of 73 (sufficient) in cycle I to 85 (good) in cycle II. Student activity also increased from an average score of 74 (sufficient) in cycle I to 81 (good) in cycle II. The improvement in students' understanding of science concepts is evident in the significant increase in the percentage of classical completion, from 55% (11 students) in cycle I to 80% (16 students) in cycle II. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of the experimental method has proven effective in improving students' understanding of science concepts in elementary schools. Abstract

Numeracy skills are fundamental competencies that elementary school students must master because they serve as the basis for learning mathematics. However, preliminary observations in Grade I of SD Negeri Ciwalat indicated that students’ numeracy skills in number operations were still low. Of the 33 students, only 15 students (45.45%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (MMC), with an average score of 59.09. This study aimed to improve students’ numeracy skills through the implementation of the drill method in number operations learning. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 33 first-grade students, consisting of 17 boys and 16 girls. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed that the drill method improved students’ numeracy skills. The average score increased from 59.09 in the pre-cycle stage to 67.58 in Cycle I and 77.88 in Cycle II. Learning mastery also increased from 45.45% in the pre-cycle stage to 60.61% in Cycle I and reached 78.79% in Cycle II. Therefore, the drill method was effective in improving students’ numeracy skills in number operations among first-grade students of SD Negeri Ciwalat.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low understanding of addition and subtraction concepts among second-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Cipetir, Sukabumi Regency. Based on initial observations, students experienced difficulties in understanding arithmetic operation concepts because learning was still abstract and did not adequately utilize learning media that matched students’ developmental characteristics. This study aimed to improve students’ understanding of addition and subtraction concepts through the use of concrete object media for second-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Cipetir, Sukabumi Regency.The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of the study were 22 students, consisting of 13 male students and 9 female students. Data collection techniques included observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and descriptive qualitative techniques.The results of the study showed that the use of concrete object media could improve students’ understanding of addition and subtraction concepts. This was indicated by an increase in the average score from 32 in the pretest to 55 in Cycle I Meeting 1, increasing to 61 in Cycle I Meeting 2, then to 65 in Cycle II Meeting 1, and reaching 85 in Cycle II Meeting 2. The percentage of learning mastery also increased from 0% at the initial condition to 86% at the end of the study. In addition, students’ learning activities improved during the learning process. Therefore, concrete object media is effective in improving elementary school students’ understanding of addition and subtraction concepts.
