Abstract

Plant resistance to drought stress could be improved by seed priming using natural plant growth regulators, such as coconut water. This research aimed examine the physiological characteristics, root development, and yield responses of waxy corn following different seed priming treatmens using coconut water and to determine to the optimal coconut water concentration for seed priming under each drought condition. The research was conducted at Banguntapan Sub-district and Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta - Indonesia, in July-October 2023. The research used a split-plot design with a main plot of watering intervals and a subplot of coconut water concentration with three replications. The main plot consisted of three levels: watering every day, once every three days, and once every six days. The subplot consisted of four levels of coconut water concentrations, i.e., 0, 33, 67, and 100%. The results indicated that seed priming with 100% coconut water increased corn yield. The increased yield could be attributed to the different photosynthetic rates and total seed weight under both well-watered and drought-stress conditions. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of soaking duration of shallot bulbs using Local Microorganisms (MOL) on seed viability and vigor during the early growth phase. The research was conducted at the Agrotechnology Laboratory, Unit Stiper Petra Baliem Wamena, from April to August 2018 using a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with six MOL soaking duration treatments: 0 minutes (control), 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, and 150 minutes, each repeated four times. The observed parameters included germination percentage, maximum growth potential, growth rate, plant height, and number of leaves at 14 days after planting (DAP). The results showed that MOL soaking treatments influenced the viability and vigor of shallot seeds. The highest germination percentage was obtained at the 60-minute treatment (95%), while maximum growth potential was relatively uniform across almost all treatments (100%). The highest growth rate was observed at the 150-minute soaking duration (85.57%), whereas the control treatment produced the lowest value (57.23%). Early vegetative growth also showed the best response at the 60-minute treatment, with plant height reaching 7.50 cm and the number of leaves reaching 10.75 at 14 DAPS.

Abstract

The presence of weed vegetation is one of the main limiting factors in increasing the productivity of paddy fields in the semi-arid region of Kupang Regency. This study aims to identify the species composition and analyse the community structure of weeds in the paddy field agro-ecosystem in Mata Air Village using the Summed Dominance Ratio (SDR) parameter. The study was conducted using a quadrat method with 24 sample plots (0.25 m²) laid out randomly. Data were analysed quantitatively to determine Relative Density (RD), Relative Frequency (RF), and SDR. The results identified three main groups of weeds with varying levels of dominance. Sedges were the most dominant group with the highest SDR value (38.74%), driven by a very high individual density in the field (RD 47.85%). Grasses ranked second (SDR 31.64%), followed by broadleaves with an SDR value of 29.62%. Although they had the lowest dominance, broad-leaved weeds exhibited the most even spatial distribution across the study area (FR 38.89%). The combined dominance of sedges and grasses, which exceeded 70%, indicates that competition for nutrients and space at the study site is heavily influenced by monocotyledonous vegetation. These findings suggest the need for the integration of intensive soil management and appropriate water management as part of an Integrated Weed Management (IWM) strategy in Mata Air Village. Keywords: weeds, vegetation analysis, mata air village, paddy fields, SDR
