Abstract

Sandfish cultivation is a meaningful way that is necessary to fulfil the production, and learning the processing aspect is also crucial to achieve a better price in selling. Suli, a coastal area, has a high potency of sandfish that needs management; however, the knowledge and skill of Suli’s people are still low regarding sandfish culture and processing. The community service program was conducted through the socialization of cultivation concept, training of sandfish processing technique, and evaluation to measure the program’s effectiveness in enhancing people’s knowledge and skill. The evaluation results indicate an increase in knowledge and skills, both for the concept of cultivation and processing techniques. The percentage of target recognition for the organisms is relatively high (83.33%), as sandfish is generally found in Suli intertidal, yet, the common name and scientific name of sandfish are not cognizant. The low percentage is more related to cultivation (12.50-16.67%) due to marine culture being infrequent in Suli waters, whereas the processing has a higher percentage (41.67%). The knowledge and skill of people are increasing after the program. Furthermore, the support of the local government is needed to stimulate the youth in the cultivation and processing business of sandfish so that the level of unemployment will decrease

Abstract

Gudang Arang community in Ambon City resides in a coastal area with a high population density. Traditional market activity is also existent. The public service program was conducted to increase people’s awareness of marine debris impact and introduce the eco-bricks concept as a practical way to reduce plastic waste from the environment. The program consisted of socialization, eco-bricks-making demonstration, discussion, and evaluation, including people’s knowledge and perspective on marine debris, its impact, and management. Based on the pre-socialization test, it was found that the knowledge about 3R of debris, waste banks, and mitigation concept of the people was low, i.e., 37.04%, 51.85%, 55.56%, respectively; whereas the concept of marine debris, its classification and impact were found good enough to very good (more than 70% to 96%). The perspective towards the presence of waste in the surroundings was excellent (more than 80%, however, the willingness to sort the waste before disposal was relatively low (no more than 70%). After the program, the evaluation increased the community’s knowledge compared to the pre-socialization ((96.30-100%). It implies that the socialization and concept demonstration such as eco-bricks-making and government’s support can positively influence the community in handling the waste

Abstract

Quarter. However, as residents of coastal areas, students still need to be equipped with basic knowledge about marine debris from the concept of mitigation to the basic methods for waste research. The Community Service Program aims to increase the knowledge of the Scouts of the Ambon Bay Quarter about marine debris mitigation and to train skills in basic waste research methods. The socialization applied lecture and discussion methods, while the training was conducted simulatively in the school environment. The training resulted on waste collection that were dominated by macro size (2.5-100 cm), and categorized into four types, namely paper (19.81%), metal (6.17%), glass (1.82%), and plastic (72.19%). Prior to the activity, the evaluation was carried out; it showed the value of initial knowledge was quite varied, including marine debris mitigation, sources, classification, and waste sorting (0-4%), the impact of marine debris and its sources (4.35%), debris counting (8.70 %), garbage collection (100%). After the activity, the knowledge was significantly increased reaching 95.65%-100% for all indicators. This combination of socialization and training had a positive impact on increasing students' knowledge and skills related to the topic. It is expected that students can implement it in various scouting activities particularly those related to the environment. In addition, as a coastal community, scouts can also be consistence in thinking and working in the coastal and marine environment, now and in the future.

Abstract

Aquaculture is currently one of the leading sectors. In practice, fish feed is often a problem because the quantity and price often depend on the season and the high production costs for feed. For this reason, alternative feeds and raw feed materials have been developed, which are considered in line with the blue economy concept that the government is promoting to address existing problems, namely magot (black soldier fly larvae), so that not only is the economy the goal, but the environment is also maintained. Using organic waste and providing commercial feed opportunities embody the concept of a blue economy in fish farming by utilizing magot feed. This Community Service activity aims to introduce and train the concept of cultivating and commercializing magot products as feed. The activities involving mariculture practitioners were carried out at the Maritime and Marine Science Center of Excellence at Pattimura University, Ambon, with several activities starting from preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In the early stages, magot cages and various materials needed for cultivation were prepared, including fermented fly-feed products. Based on the evaluation results, there was an increase in knowledge, reaching 85.71% -100%, while the increase in skills ranged from 90.48% -100%. The combination of lecture methods and direct training can provide effective results because participants can listen, discuss, and practice directly.
