Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of traditional Islamic education during the golden age of Andalusia as a unique and progressive model of intellectual civilization. The main focus of the research is to examine the educational institutions, integrated curricula, and the contributions of prominent Muslim scholars in shaping a scientific tradition that had a significant influence on European intellectual development. Employing a qualitative historical approach, this study analyzes both primary and secondary sources, including historical manuscripts, contemporary scholarly works, and academic literature published between 2018 and 2025. The findings reveal that the Andalusian Islamic education system emphasized the integration of mosques, madrasahs, and libraries as key centers of scholarly activity. The curriculum developed in Andalusia was interdisciplinary in nature, blending religious sciences with rational sciences, and fostering a culture of intercultural and interfaith intellectual exchange. This model of education led to the emergence of influential figures such as Ibn Rushd, Ibn Tufail, and Al-Zahrawi, who played crucial roles in transmitting knowledge to the West. Furthermore, the Andalusian educational legacy significantly contributed to the rise of European intellectual movements, especially during the Renaissance. The study also highlights the relevance of Andalusia's educational values in the context of modern Islamic education, particularly in promoting knowledge integration, tolerance, and lifelong learning. These findings enrich the discourse on Islamic educational heritage and offer important insights for reformulating inclusive and future-oriented curricula in contemporary Islamic education.

Abstract

The crisis of the ideal educator figure in the modern era has become a critical issue in contemporary education. Teachers are no longer seen merely as transmitters of knowledge but are increasingly expected to be holistic educators who guide both the intellect and the soul of learners. In this context, the concept of murabbi found in Islamic Sufi tradition offers a meaningful framework for reinterpretation. This study focuses on the thoughts of Al-Junayd al-Baghdadi, a prominent classical Sufi, who formulated a spiritual and ethical model of the murabbi. A philosophical-hermeneutical approach is employed to analyze classical Sufi texts and their relevance to modern teacher education systems. The study identifies four key pillars of the ideal murabbi figure according to Al-Junayd: profound knowledge (al-‘ilm), spiritual piety (al-wara’), exemplary conduct (al-uswah), and wisdom (al-hikmah). These components form a holistic spiritual-pedagogical framework capable of addressing the growing need for character education in the digital age. The findings imply the necessity to reform teacher education curricula to incorporate Sufi values and to foster educators who are not only methodologically skilled but also spiritually and ethically grounded. Al-Junayd’s concept of the teacher as murabbi offers a transformative vision in responding to the current value disorientation in education.

Abstract

This article explores the role of zakat as a central instrument in the Islamic economic system, functioning as a means of wealth redistribution and achieving social justice. Zakat embodies not only spiritual obligations but also economic and social values that strengthen the welfare structure of the Muslim community. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research to analyze both classical and contemporary literature concerning the role of zakat in Islamic economics. The findings reveal that zakat significantly contributes to reducing social inequality, enhancing the welfare of the poor, and fostering social solidarity. The optimization of zakat requires professional, transparent, and digitally integrated management systems. Moreover, productive zakat can transform recipients (mustahik) into contributors (muzaki), promote economic independence, and support sustainable development. Integrating zakat into national fiscal policies also strengthens economic stability and advances the realization of Islamic social justice. Therefore, zakat should be regarded not merely as a religious obligation but as a strategic pillar of the Islamic economic framework that contributes to building a just, prosperous, and civilized society.
