Abstract

Translating online news is a common practice among translators working at government institutions and ministries. Almost all government institutions in Indonesia now have their own official websites and several of them are even available in other languages, particularly English. One of the features of those websites that is usually translated into English is online news articles. Translating online news articles from Indonesian into English poses its own translation difficulties and challenges, including the facts that the original texts (ST) are mostly poorly written, STs that are not clear and sometimes incomprehensible, STs that contain inaccurate data and when those STs have to be translated into English, they have to be ‘modified’ so as to conform to the standard writing of news article in English. Therefore, in this case, a translator has to do more beyond translating. Oftentimes, he has to re-write the articles and produce a proper English news article based on the ST, he has to research missing but important information and he also has to correct incorrect data or information from the original article. Simply put, in the case of translating online news websites, there is blurred line between the concept of ‘translation’ and ‘re-writing’ and this paper tries to investigate whether translating online news articles can be regarded as a ‘pure’ form translation or rewriting. The source of data for this research is taken from news articles of the official website of Cabinet Secretary and their English versions. Several Indonesian articles with their English translations are randomly selected for the analysis of this paper. The result of this paper shows that in many cases of the translation of news article on the website of Cabinet Secretariat, those Indonesian articles are mostly ‘rewritten’ in the Target Text. This paper also concludes that in the case of online news translation, the translator often has to do more than just translating but also rewriting. Abstract

Translation can become a long process, which can begin from pre-translation phase, translation phase itself, and post translation phase. Each phase may also consist of more than one part. One of the parts in the post-translation process is revising, which mainly aims to improve quality of the translation. Nevertheless, the question remains as to what can be revised in the revision of a translation. Therefore, this paper tries to investigate aspects in translation that can be revised by a reviser. This research adopts a qualitative method with a comparative conceptual method, while the source data consists of selected sentences from four English translations of online news articles on the official website of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia. Several sentences from the four papers are randomly selected to be further discussed in this paper. The result of this paper shows that there are at least four aspects that can be revised in the translation of those articles, namely accuracy, grammatical errors, as well as punctuation and typographical errors, and style. Keywords: translation, revision, reviser, online newspaper articles.

Abstract

One type of translation tasks commonly carried out in many government institutions in Indonesia is translation of names of government institutions from Indonesian into foreign languages, notably English. This type of translation arguably poses not only technical challenges but also nontechnical challenges. This paper seeks to review challenges related to this type of translation. The research adopted a qualitative descriptive method by making an inventory of listing and presenting existing translations of the names of government institutions, proposing translations of the names of government institutions that are not yet available, and explaining problems identified in the existing translations, as well as problems related to the translation of the names of the government institutions. The result of this research shows that most government institutions do not have English translation of the names of their institutions. The existing translations of the names of several institutions even also differ in terms of translation style. To that end, it is important to not only encourage government institutions that do not have yet the official translations of their institutions to have them translated but also to harmonize the already existing translations in order to create uniformity of the translations of the names of all government institutions in Indonesia. Keywords: translation, government, names of institutions
