Abstract

This article discusses the domestic violence portrayed in Guy de Maupassant's short story La Confidence. The story centers on Marquise de Rennedou, who recounts to her friend, Baroness de Grangerie, her revenge for her husband's harsh treatment. The purpose of this study is to explain the depiction of patriarchal normalization that causes domestic violence, as viewed through the concept of power represented in La Confidence, along with the characters' efforts to resist such violence. This research employs a qualitative methodology using A.J. Greimas’s structural analysis theory, based on the actantial and functional schemes. The actantial scheme helps identify the functions and roles of characters and their relationships, while the functional scheme divides the plot to understand how the sequence of events influences the core of the short story related to the topic. Additionally, Michel Foucault's power relations theory is applied to examine how patriarchal societal norms influence men's behavior in the household, potentially leading to violence. The analysis ultimately reveals that the normalization of patriarchy in society, which elevates men's status, can be a cause of domestic violence, as illustrated in La Confidence.

Abstract

Indonesia’s coastal and archipelagic regions are vulnerable to disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods. In this context, community service activities require participatory and educational approaches that are easily understood by people of various ages and backgrounds. This article discusses the use of visual aids—such as infographics, leaflets, animated videos, illustrations, and x-banners—as tools for disaster education. Through a literature review of four articles on community service programs, this study finds that visual aids are effective in increasing disaster risk awareness, reinforcing visual memory of mitigation procedures, and engaging vulnerable groups such as children and indigenous communities. This approach also enables the integration of local knowledge into culturally and regionally grounded risk reduction strategies. The article recommends the use of visual methods as a transformative strategy for disaster education in coastal and island areas.

Abstract

Between the Sahara Desert and the Sudanese Savannah, the Sahel region has become a contested geopolitical space. This study analyses how France is reconstructing its hegemony following its military withdrawal through the rhetoric of Emmanuel Macron (2021 and 2025). Using Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1995) and the theory of spatial production (Lefebvre, 1974), this study examines how the discourses of “partnership” and “security” are employed to maintain French influence. Qualitative methods were applied to Macron's speeches, French media, and statements by former presidents of Sahel countries. The results show that France is redefining the Sahel as a ‘crisis zone’ requiring external management, through a shift in the military's role into the economic and symbolic spheres. Even with a diminished military footprint, France’s hegemony continues to be articulated through discourse. Thus, it demonstrates how discursive strategies uphold neocolonial power after physical disengagement. This study contributes to postcolonial and geopolitical studies by showing that hegemony can be maintained through discursive strategy, even after the decrease in physical presence.
