Abstract

This community service program was implemented to address the increasing risk of kidney function disorders among school-aged children, which is closely related to the high consumption of unhealthy snacks high in sodium, sugar, synthetic additives, and preservatives. The activity aimed to enhance students practical knowledge in identifying and avoiding unhealthy snacks as an early preventive effort for kidney damage. The program was conducted at SDN 84 Parepare involving 35 sixth-grade students through several stages, including preparation, interactive health education, role-play sessions, and group discussions. Educational media such as posters, demonstration tools, and visual presentations were utilized to support the learning process. The results showed that most students initially had limited understanding of the link between unhealthy snacks and kidney health, with 80% reporting frequent consumption of snacks without considering hygiene or nutritional content. After the intervention, students demonstrated improved awareness, actively engaged in discussions, and were able to identify healthier food options. The interactive learning approach, combined with visual aids and storytelling, effectively increased students’ comprehension and interest in adopting healthier eating habits. This program highlights the importance of continuous school-based nutrition education as a promotive and preventive measure to support children’s kidney health.

Abstract

Infectious diseases among elementary school children remain high, primarily due to inadequate handwashing habits with soap. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of SDN 84 Pare-Pare students regarding the importance of handwashing with soap as a disease prevention measure. The program was conducted on November 6, 2025, involving 35 students and 5 teachers. Methods included educational lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations of proper handwashing steps, and educational games. The results showed high participant enthusiasm and improved understanding of the six-step handwashing procedure. Teachers also committed to integrating regular handwashing practices into daily routines. These findings indicate that an educational and interactive approach is effective in promoting clean and healthy behaviors within the school environment.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is the best period of breast feeding intake for infants because it maximizes health benefits for growth and development. However in reality, there are many hindrances for mothers to give exclusive breastfeeding. Negative perceptions from the mothers itself regarding breast milk often caused the low rates of exclusive breastfeeding. Conventional therapies that has been given only solved one problem at a time, while the actual solution is a holistic care which includes mind, body, and soul. Hypnobreastfeeding is one of the preferred therapy that contains holistic care to improve the exclusive breastfeeding. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of hypnobreastfeeding on exclusive breastfeeding at Mumbulsari Community Health Center, Jember, East Java, Indonesia. This study used pre-experimental design with post-test only design on pregnant women in third trimester. Simple random sampling was used as sampling technique with 16 treatment group and 16 control group which fulfill inclusion and exclusion criteria. The experimental data was collected using observation sheets which then statistically analyzed using bivariate chi-square test. The result of chi-square test showed that p=0,003 (p < 0,05) which shows that hypnobreastfeeding positively influence exclusive breastfeeding. In conclusion, hypnobreastfeeding is strongly suggested as the treatment to improve exclusive breastfeeding on mothers.

Abstract

Marine tourism in Indonesia has experienced rapid growth but is not accompanied by an increase in tourist safety standards. Lumpue Beach in Parepare City is a tourist destination that attracts many visitors, but the Lumpue beach management does not yet have First Aid (P3K) capacity. The Community Service (PKM) activity aims to improve health literacy and tourist safety standards at Lumpue Beach through First Aid education. This activity uses a community service with educational method for 180 minutes at the Parepare Campus. The number of participants is 15 people. The education used poster media and was followed by a semi-informal discussion. Evaluation of the level of understanding used a pre-test and post-test which were analyzed descriptively quantitatively with indicators of success of a minimum score increase of 20% and a minimum post-test achievement of 80% as well as the ability to simulate First Aid. The results of the education showed a score increase of 68.57% from 52.5 (pre-test) to 88.5 (post-test). The results of interviews and simulations showed that participants understood the concept and were able to practice First Aid procedures well. Structured education based on visual media and simulations has proven effective in improving Lumpue Beach management's preparedness for handling tourist accidents. Further recommendations include conducting periodic evaluations every 1-3 months to ensure participants' skills are maintained.

Abstract

Smoking behavior is a modifiable risk factor for hypertension, with hypertension prevalence generally increasing alongside higher cigarette consumption and longer smoking duration. Research on hypertension prevalence among productive-age smokers in Indonesia using national-scale data remains scarce in Indonesian publications. This study aims to analyze factors influencing hypertension among productive-age smokers in Indonesia in 2015, utilizing data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2015. The research employs a quantitative design with an analytical observational approach using a cross-sectional study. The sample comprises 10,677 productive-age smokers in Indonesia, selected via multi-stage random sampling across 32 provinces in 2015. Independent variables include age, gender, employment status, work region, cigarettes smoked, smoking duration, and daily cigarette consumption, while the dependent variable is hypertension. Hypertension prevalence among productive-age smokers in Indonesia in 2015 reached 8.53%, with significant predictors including age ≥36 years, female gender, employment status, smoking intensity of 21–30 or >31 cigarettes/day, and smoking duration >16 years—reflecting multifactorial interactions of biological, behavioral, and socioeconomic factors. Accordingly, recommendations include routine screening at primary health centers for at-risk groups, tobacco control programs based on dose-duration, economic empowerment for the unemployed, intensive screening with lifestyle counseling by healthcare providers, and longitudinal designs for future causal studies.

Abstract

Enrekang Regency is the main producer of milk in South Sulawesi, offering significant potential for developing probiotic products based on indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB). This study aimed to analyze bacterial cell density in three types of Enrekang milk samples (fresh, pasteurized, and dangke waste) using Nutrient Agar (NA) and de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe Agar (MRSA) media, and to characterize the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of LAB isolates. Results showed that bacterial density on NA medium ranged from 2.685 × 10⁸ to 5.596 × 10⁹ CFU/mL, with no significant differences among samples (F = 6.525; p = 0.081). In contrast, MRSA medium revealed highly significant differences (F = 615.789; p = 0.000), with pasteurized milk showing the highest density (1.633 × 10⁹ CFU/mL). Eleven LAB isolates (P1–P11) from pasteurized milk displayed uniform macroscopic characteristics. Microscopically, all isolates were Gram-positive, comprising cocci and coccobacilli with variable chain arrangements. These findings indicate the presence of indigenous LAB with promising potential as probiotic candidates or starter cultures and provide a basis for further biotechnological development and functional characterization.
