Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) has diverse varieties with different secondary metabolite content. Postharvest treatment with low-temperature storage and chitosan coating is expected to expand the shelf life of sweet potatoes. The combination of these treatments will affect the secondary metabolite content of diverse sweet potato varieties. Therefore, this study aims to observe the secondary metabolite content and shelf life extension of 3 sweet potato varieties after coating with chitosan and low-temperature storage. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with a three-factors experiment. The first factor was chitosan concentration at 0, 10, 15, and 20 g/L, the second was storage room temperature at 25, 15, and 5 °C, while the third was the color of sweet potato varieties namely white, purple, and orange from Tembakur and Mendut varieties. Meanwhile, the control group was tubers without chitosan coating at a storage temperature of 25 °C. Each treatment had five replications and the parameters assessed were changes in wet weight, hardness, respiration, the total chlorophyll level, carotenoid, vitamin C, reducing sugar, and the level of flavonoid. Data were analyzed with Analysis of Variance and then continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test at a significance level of 5%. The result showed that low-temperature storage combined with chitosan coating affected the shelf life of sweet potatoes. Overall, the best storage temperature was 15 °C, indicated by the highest residual secondary metabolite and the most extended shelf life. The 5°C treatment decreased oxygen consumption during storage, as indicated by a low respiration rate. However, this storage temperature caused a chilling injury and culminated in the shorter shelf life of all examined sweet potatoes. The best coating was achieved by chitosan 15 g/L, indicated by the capability to coat sweet potato surface and maintain the high content of all targeted chemical components. The results also revealed that 20 g/L chitosan concentration is not practical for coating due to its in elasticity and the potential to create a crack in the coating layer.

Abstract

This article examines the extension of liquid organic fertilizer from cow urine in farmer groups in Johunut Village. The majority of Johunut Village community works as farmers and breeders. However, the people of Johunut Village have not used cow urine even though they have many benefits in cow urine such as, the price is relatively cheap, easy to obtain, and contained nutrients needed by plants. This socialization activity has the aim to increase public knowledge about the potential of cow urine as liquid fertilizer. Meanwhile, this article is useful for fostering farmers' independence so as not to depend on chemical fertilizers and subsidies. The socialization activity regarding the making of liquid organic fertilizer from cow urine was held on February 8, 2023 consisting of two sessions, the first was a material exposure session and the second was the practice session for making liquid organic fertilizer from cow urine. The socialization activities carried out showed the enthusiasm of relatively high participants. However, in the sustainability of making liquid organic fertilizer from livestock urine by residents constrained by unodified livestock pens to accommodate cow urine. Abstract

Stunting remains a major health problem in Sanggrahan Village, with 11 children under five recorded as stunted and an adolescent anemia prevalence of 57%. The village has strong potential resources, including 95 active health cadres, home gardens that can be utilized for family medicinal plants (TOGA) cultivation, and local institutions such as the Women Farmers’ Group (KWT) and the Village Health Post (PKD). The aim of this community service program (PKM) is to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health cadres and the community; develop natural resources such as home gardens and unused land; implement community midwifery service strategies; create a golden generation; improve the community’s economy; and encourage the use of website-based technology. The program was carried out using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method, which applies persuasive, educative, participatory, and normative approaches. The implementation included several stages: socialization, training, mentoring, technology application, and sustainability. The results showed significant improvements in the capacity of health cadres, KWT, and the community in managing TOGA and producing innovative herbal-based products such as ginger powder, moringa nuggets, and healthy moringa-based snacks. Village institutions were also strengthened through the establishment of a Nutrition Post (Pondok Gizi), while PKD played an important role in nutrition education, early detection of stunting, and the use of educational tools. In addition, the UMKM Expo proved effective in expanding promotion and marketing of local products. This community-based intervention generated a dual impact: improving community health status through stunting prevention while simultaneously fostering economic independence. As a follow-up, continuous mentoring, product diversification, quality standardization, and strengthening of marketing networks are recommended to optimize and enhance program competitiveness. The synergy between KWT and PKD may serve as a sustainable empowerment model based on local potential and village wisdom.

Abstract

Stunting is a growth disorder in children under five years old caused by chronic malnutrition and recurrent infections. This condition is characterized by stunted growth in height in children under five years of age due to long-term malnutrition. The problems identified in Sanggrahan Village are related to health problems due to a lack of understanding about nutrition, family health, knowledge, environment, attitudes and behavior regarding stunting which is still a priority program. 18 children under five with stunted growth were found in Sanggrahan Village. This research aims to implement the One Team One Family method in an effort to reduce the prevalence of stunting and build empowered villages. Through an individual approach, families of stunted toddlers receive intensive assistance in the fields of nutrition, health and childcare. The research results show that the one team one family method is effective in increasing family knowledge about stunting, improving nutrition for toddlers and encouraging children's growth and development. Apart from that, this assistance is expected to be able to empower families and communities in overcoming stunting in a sustainable manner.
