Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain: (1) how social studies teachers at SMPN 33 Makassar help students acquire moral values through character education; (2) the methods teachers employ to incorporate character education into Social Studies instruction at SMPN 33 Makassar; and (3) the elements that facilitate and hinder students' moral values development through Social Studies instruction at SMPN 33 Makassar. The study's findings show that: (1) teachers at SMPN 33 Makassar play a variety of roles in helping students develop moral values through character education; (2) teachers use contextual approaches, role modeling, and habituation to integrate character education into Social Studies learning; and (3) there are both supporting and inhibiting factors in the development of students' moral values through Social Studies learning at SMPN 33 Makassar. The supporting factors include a conducive school environment and meaningful learning, while the influence of mass media and technology. This study demonstrates that when character education is incorporated into the learning process in a planned and consistent way, social studies instruction plays a significant impact in helping students develop their moral beliefs.
