Abstract

Introduction: Cancer patients have a complex journey. Technological developments offer convenience in communicating and accessing health information. Cancer patient portals were developed to coordinate and integrate care by overcoming existing barriers. This study aims to explain the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of using patient portals in oncology services. Methods: The design of this study was a systematic review, with the source articles drawn from PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and Scopus. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to screen articles with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A critical appraisal was conducted using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist 2020 and the MMAT 2018. Narrative descriptive approaches are used for data synthesis. Results: We screened 3,301 articles using inclusion, exclusion, and duplication criteria, resulting in 10 articles for analysis. Communication and care coordination (n=4) were among the main benefits of using patient portals. Perceived obstacles such as limited resources (n=2), socio-demographic challenges (n=3), and limited information sources (n=2) are still found. On the other hand, the use of patient portals creates opportunities to address information needs and provide assistance (n=1), increase security and privacy (n=1), and improve service efficiency (n=2). Conclusions: Patient portals play an essential role in improving coordination and engagement among cancer patients, despite ongoing challenges related to access and digital literacy. For nursing, these portals strengthen nurses' roles in education, coordination, and the use of evidence-based technology to improve the quality of care.

Abstract

Modern nursing is often trapped in a technical-clinical routine, thus risking losing its basic essence as a scientific discipline. To maintain its professional identity, nursing requires a solid philosophical foundation through aspects of ontology, epistemology, and axiology. This study aims to synthesize the development of these three philosophical aspects in modern nursing practice, as well as identify their contributions to strengthening the nursing discipline. This study uses a narrative literature review design. Literature searches were conducted through the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases with keywords nursing philosophy, ontology, epistemology, axiology, and nursing science. Inclusion criteria included full-text articles in Indonesian and English published between 2016-2024 that specifically discuss the philosophy of nursing science. An analysis of ten selected articles shows that ontologically, nursing defines humans as holistic-relational entities. Epistemologically, there has been a shift from the dominance of positivism toward the integration of evidence-based science with intuitive and reflective knowledge. Axiologically, the value of caring remains the primary ethical compass. However, this study found a gap, where axiology and epistemology are often more dominant in educational curricula, while ontology (the essence of nursing's existence) tends to be neglected in bureaucratized clinical practice. The integration of nursing philosophy has proven crucial to preventing dehumanization in healthcare. The implications of this study's findings urge a reorientation of educational curricula and clinical practice standards that focus not only on technical competencies but also on strengthening philosophical foundations to ensure the sustainability of humanistic nursing science in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: In the last few decades, Quality of Life (QoL) in palliative cancer patients has become an important aspect to consider. Nurses play a crucial role in improving QoL through nursing interventions. However, reviews on the variety of nursing interventions to improve QoL in palliative cancer patients have not been widely conducted. This scoping review aims to identify findings related to nursing interventions and palliative care outcomes for cancer with cancer. Method: The scoping review was conducted through PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and EBSCOhost. The Arksey and O’Malley framework was used to address the research question: “What nursing interventions are implemented to improve the QoL of palliative care cancer patients?” Study selection is based on the PRISMA-ScR 2020 guidelines with the scheme P: palliative cancer patients, I: nursing interventions, C: no intervention, and O: improvement in quality of life. The inclusion criteria were original articles published between 2020 and 2025, Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental, and cohort studies. Review articles, protocols, commentaries, and books were excluded. Quality assessment was conducted using the JBI Critical Appraisal tool Results: From 990 records, 8 articles met the criteria. Nursing interventions included education, emotional and spiritual support, mediation, decision-making, nursing planning, nutritional support, comfort care, complementary therapy, and community service coordination. Improvements in QoL were observed in symptom reduction, social support, psychological, information, patient independence, and care satisfaction. Conclusions: Nursing interventions are crucial for improving the QoL of palliative cancer patients. Future research should test nursing interventions in palliative cancer patients, considering culture, special groups, and community services.

Abstract

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, including gastrointestinal cancer, which continues to increase in prevalence. One contributing risk factor is long-term alcohol consumption. This study aims to determine the relationship between alcohol consumption and the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer. The study design used a scoping review through four databases, namely ScienceDirect, PubMed, SpringerLink, and Medline. Articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, with the screening process following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The selected articles were then synthesized using the Guidance for Conducting Systematic Scoping Review (2020) guidelines. A total of seven articles met the criteria. Various types of gastrointestinal cancer related to alcohol consumption were found, including colorectal, esophageal, stomach, and liver cancer, and even breast cancer. Most studies examined current and past patterns of alcohol consumption. Overall, the findings of this study prove that alcohol consumption, whether in the past, present, or cumulative, is associated with an increased incidence of gastrointestinal cancer, especially colorectal cancer.
