Abstract

This study investigates students’ perspectives and measured their attitude, confidence, and anxiety when interacting with omputer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) through project-based instructions. Thirty students from a CALL course participated in this study by responding to a questionnaire and writing a reflective note about their experiences in the course. The qualitative research findings indicate that the majority of the students possess a ositive attitude, confidence and anxiety levels towards the use of technology in their course even though the statistical analysis indicated that there were no significant differences of the students’ attitudes, confidence, and anxiety levels before and after taking the CALL course. Considering the findings, the researchers suggest hat the technology-based projects discussed in the present study can become viable learning activities to prepare pre-service EFL teachers to deal with the effort and initiative by the Ministry of Education in some countries to encourage local teachers integrating the best and wisest use of technology into lessons. Pedagogical implications for teaching and learning CALL as well as direction for further research are discussed in the study.

Abstract

This research was done on vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) among EnglishDepartment (ED) students. The main purpose of this study was to investigate theVLS that were mostly used by ED students. The two sub-questions were: (1)What are the most frequent VLS used? and (2) What are the most useful VLS forED students? To find the answer, this study used a questionnaire adapted fromSchmitt’ s (2004) VLS taxonomy. After analyzing the questionnaires from 100participants, it was discovered that some of the most preferred and useful VLSwere opening the dictionary and repeating the word in mind frequently.

Abstract

To date, there have been very few studies that map the major research trends in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, such as those in Indonesia. To address that gap and to benefit undergraduate and graduate students, EFL researchers, or practitioners looking for a current research topic and theories to frame their studies, this paper reviews the past research studies (n=53) published in four Indonesian national journals to explore Indonesia’s EFL research trends in 2020, including research topics, theoretical frameworks, and research methods. The journals were selected because of their focus and scope related to English language teaching and education as well as their rank in Sinta 1 and Sinta 2 (two of the highest levels out of six Sinta levels) of the Indonesian web-based research information system. Based on a holistic review of the articles checked by the peer-debriefing strategy to ensure the review’s credibility, the analysis results show that the previous studies mainly explore English teaching strategy and education technology research areas and use fairly old theories as their theoretical framework. As for the research method, most of the studies use a qualitative research method, take place in university settings, and involve university students as their research subjects. The meanings of the analysis results, teaching implications for a research class, and directions for further research are presented.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to serve 33 high school students in Kristen Kalam Kudus Sukoharjo Senior High School, a private school in Sukoharjo, Central Java, Indonesia. More specifically, the program was in the form of virtual English Conversation Club (ECC) activities for eight meetings. This ECC program was done primarily via Zoom Meeting and Google Classroom, facilitated by eight lectures and nine lecturer assistants. Each meeting lasted for 45 minutes. The facilitating lecturer started the ECC session by introducing learning activities, giving instructions, and opportunities for the participants to practice their English speaking with the lecturer's assistants in the breakout rooms. Afterward, ECC participants were asked to upload a short video based on the online practice to their social media accounts (like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube). Details of activities and various technology tools in each ECC session were presented in this paper. Although there were some challenges, all the ECC activities went as the lecturers had planned. This paper ends with several suggestions for the improvement of similar ECC activities in the future.
