Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) method on the mathematical communication skills of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar after applying the Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) method. The type of research used is experimental research. In this research the author used a quantitative approach. The design used in this research is One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This research involved an experimental class that was treated with the Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) learning method and then given pre-test and post-test treatment to draw conclusions. For more details, see table 3.1 below. The research results obtained showed that the Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) method had an influence on students' mathematical communication skills, reaching an average pre-test score in the Experiment class of 48.63, while the average score was 48.63. Post-test average in the Experiment class was 78.63. This proves that the Experimental class has further improved abilities after being given treatment using the TAPPS Method.

Abstract

The Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) emphasizes the importance of numeracy literacy among students. In response, this study aims to develop a valid and practical problem-based learning (PBL) model to enhance numeracy skills in junior high school students, offering a reference framework for mathematics educators. A Research and Development (RD) methodology was employed using the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. The research involved iterative trials to evaluate and refine the effectiveness of the proposed PBL model. The developed PBL model showed high validity and practicality. Students’ mathematical numeracy achievement reached 87.50% using the classical PBL approach. Additionally, average numeracy scores improved from 2.73 in Trial I to 3.05 in Trial II. Students demonstrated active engagement throughout the learning process, meeting criteria for effective learning as defined in the study. The results confirm that the PBL model effectively enhances students’ numeracy literacy and supports active learning. The novelty of this study lies in the validated and effective instructional device developed through a structured RD process. The final model provides a practical tool for mathematics instruction in junior high schools, concluding the development cycle with promising implications for curriculum design and pedagogical practice.

Abstract

The limited availability of digital platforms specifically designed to support the development of science teachers' higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is a major problem. This study aims to develop a web-based academic application called Academic Virtual Network (AVNET), designed to enhance HOTS among science teachers in North Sumatra. The study is motivated by the limited availability of digital platforms that specifically support HOTS oriented professional development for science teachers. The research employed the ADDIE development model. Data were collected through needs assessments and expert validation, as well as limited and extensive trials. Expert validation involved specialists in educational technology, instructional design, and science education. The limited trial included 40 science teachers from several districts in North Sumatra. The results show that the Avnet application is highly valid in terms of content, pedagogy, and technical quality, and it is effective in improving teachers’ HOTS, with a gain score of 0.62. These findings indicate that AVNET holds strong potential as a digital solution for HOTS-based teacher professional development, and it is recommended that future studies expand its implementation nationally and integrate it with broader digital learning ecosystems to maximize its impact.
