Abstract

The study focuses on the transformation of traditional music from Batak sub-ethnicities (Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Mandailing, Angkola) into a form of popular music integrated into the national recording and entertainment industry. The method employed is a descriptive, qualitative approach with a historical perspective, incorporating content analysis of lyrics, album visuals, and performance documentation. The results show that Batak Pop music functions as a hybrid space between tradition and modernity, where traditional musical elements are adapted to a modern pop format through the role of pioneering figures and recording media. Music is not only entertainment, but also a medium for articulating social, spiritual values, and collective identity of the Batak people amidst social change and the development of media technology.
