Abstract

The contemporary Islamic education system is facing significant challenges due to the rapid pace of globalization, technological advancements, and ideological changes. These challenges call for an adaptive educational model that balances traditional Islamic values with modern educational needs. Fazlur Rahman (1919–1988), a prominent Muslim philosopher, provided essential insights into this issue. Rahman critiqued the intellectual stagnation within the Muslim world and the division between religious and secular knowledge. His educational philosophy promotes a holistic integration of science, ethics, and methodology, advocating for a system that nurtures not just intellectual capabilities, but also moral and spiritual development. This study aims to analyze Rahman’s thoughts on Islamic education and explore their relevance in addressing the current issues within contemporary Islamic education. Using a qualitative approach and library research, this paper examines Rahman’s works, particularly his hermeneutical method of double movement, and their implications for modern Islamic curricula. The study finds that Rahman’s approach can provide a progressive framework for Islamic education, emphasizing critical thinking, moral integrity, and the integration of religious and general knowledge. Rahman’s educational philosophy is crucial in reshaping Islamic education to meet contemporary demands without losing its Islamic identity.

Abstract

This study examines how vocational schools govern students’ smartphone use as part of digital akhlak formation. A qualitative field study was conducted in three public vocational schools in Bantul Regency through interviews, observation, and document analysis. The findings show that smartphones help students access information and complete school tasks, yet they also fragment attention, alter sleep rhythms, weaken social sensitivity, and create digital harm through memes, indirect insults, and mocking comments. Schools respond through phone-use regulations, learning contracts, religious habituation, teacher exemplarity, classroom supervision, educative sanctions, and counseling services. However, this formation remains fragile because smartphone use continues at home and in peer-based digital spaces that schools cannot fully monitor. The study proposes digital akhlak formation as a process of cultivating students’ responsibility for time, body, language, information, and social relations through the negotiated roles of schools, families, and communities.

Moral (akhlak) education is an important thing in education that aims to create children with good and noble character. However, it turns out that there are still many moral problems that children do, even though children are considered the future generation for their family, their religion, and their nation. The problems that many children do are acts of violence, lying, seeking, drugs, and so on. It is necessary to provide proper education so that children have good principles or guidelines in their lives. Al-Qur'an is the word of Allah SWT which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, which can be a life guide for humans in managing life, in order to obtain inner and outer happiness and have good morals for their lives.
