Abstract

A preliminary study conducted on 10 tailors in Cilegon District showed that 60% of them suffered from moderate low back pain which could reduce their productivity. The purpose of this study is to find out the factors related to lower back pain complaints. This study used a cross-sectional design with a sample size of 70 tailors in Cilegon District. The sampling technique in this study was carried out using the accidental sampling method. Data were analysed through univariate and bivariate analysis, using the chi square test. The results of the analysis showed a relationship between age (P value=0.006), back posture (P value=0.002), and exercise habits (P value=0.015) with moderate low back pain complaints. There was no significant relationship between sitting duration (P value=0.511) and moderate low back pain complaints. The results showed that majority of respondents felt complaints of LBP in the moderate category (57.1%). Tailors should pay more attention to their back posture when sewing and do stretching and exercising.

The data collection technique used interviews and observations with questionnaires and observation sheets as the instruments. The data obtained were in the form of respondent characteristics and factors relating to complaints of skin disorders among fishermen. The data was then analyzed by chi-square test. This study showed that 80% of respondents experienced complaints of skin disorders, 82% of respondents had long years of service, and 96% of respondents wore complete personal protective equipment (PPE), and 56% of respondents had a good personal hygiene. The statistical test results showed years of service (p value 0.782), use of PPE (p value 1.000), personal hygiene (p value 0.198) had no significant relationship to complaints of skin disorders. Fishermen should be given promotion of personal hygiene importance and control to PPE completeness which is used to reduce the risk of experiencing skin disorders complaints.

Abstract

Lower back pain is a common health problem encountered worldwide, leading to a decreased productivity and spinal function capacity. The prevalence of lower back pain varies annually with incidence rates ranging from 15 to 45%. This study aimed to identify the relationship between complaints of lower back pain, years of service, length of service, work position, stretching, and exercise habits. The research design utilized a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all tailors at Pasar Raya Block F, totaling 35 tailors with the sample size of 35 individuals selected by using total sampling method. The data were analyzed by using univariate and bivariate analysis through chi-square test. The results indicated a correlation between work position (p value 0.000) and complaints of lower back pain. Whereas, no correlation was found between years of service (p value 0.565), length of service (p value 0.090), stretching (p value 0.070), and exercise habits (p value 0.712) with complaints of lower back pain. Tailors were encouraged to improve their work positions during their daily activities. Further research may explore other factors, such as the addition of seat cushions and body mass index (BMI) that may be associated with complaints of lower back pain among tailors.
