Abstract

Panaragan ethnic in Ponorogo and Madura ethnic are two ethnic groups with famous cultures from the East Java. These two ethnic groups have many cultural similarities, especially traditional clothing that may have resulted by acculturation. Studies on the acculturation process is rarely discussed due to limited primary sources, but there are still several secondary sources that are worthy for considering. This study uses a historiography and guided by the aspect of cultural hybridity. The interaction between Ponorogo and Madura has occurred since Ponorogo was founded with a family relationship between the two ethnic. The development process of Reyog also influenced the formation of Penadon clothes. In addition, traditional Madurese clothing or several other regions are actually rooted in one concept of the Astronesian’s belief in viewing black as sacred color. However, each ethnic group has its own uniqueness that is different from other ethnic groups and different functions of clothing. The results of this study are useful for the next generation as a form of cultural appreciation that is not only limited to preservation but also the advancement of culture.

Abstract

Kabupaten Ponorogo merekam jejak peradaban Kerajaan Wengker yang masih diperdebatkan lokasi pusat pemerintahan. Berdasarkan observasi awal, peneliti menemukan pola garis imajiner yaitu Situs Sendang Beji, Situs Sirah keteng, Goa Pertapa Selo Jolo Tundho dan Punden Ngreco. Ponorogo Regency records traces of the civilization of the Wengker Kingdom which is still debated on the location of the seat of government. Based on initial observations, researchers found imaginary line patterns, namely the Sendang Beji Site, Sirah keteng Site, Selo Jolo Tundho and Punden Ngreco. The line pattern shows the possibility of a spatial and cosmological pattern. The method used is Grounded Research which is assisted by archaeoastronomy and culture to find the relationship between imaginary lines and the position of celestial bodies. This research uses astronomical analysis techniques and archaeological analysis obtained from interviews, literature, archaeological objects and geographical conditions. The results showed that the main imaginary line found by the researcher has a parallelism with the sun in the month of Caitra which is the first month in the saka calendar as well as the spiritual cosmology of the Wengker Community which is oriented towards the Holy mountain Wilis. The topography of archaeological remains on the imaginary line and its surroundings has not shown the existence of a central government location but is evidence of the existence of the Wengker Kingdom civilization which is divided into 3 areas, namely, tani or residential areas, dharma lpas or king's grant land and karesyian. In addition, the sites around the imaginary line also show the defense pattern of the king or ruler of the Wengker region. The results of this research can be a reference for the government in preserving historical sites in Ponorogo, as well as adding to the treasury of knowledge, so that it continues to be developed.

Abstract

Background: During the colonial period, indigenous women faced severe marginalization in education due to restrictive traditional customs like pingitan and a lack of serious attention from the Dutch East Indies government. This situation began to shift in the early 20th century following the implementation of the Ethical Policy, which spurred humanists and local elites to establish specialized female educational institutions across Java. While major cities like Semarang have been widely researched, the historical development of such schools in smaller regions remains understudied. Purpose: This study aims to deconstruct the history of the Madioensche Kartinischool (Kartini School in Madiun) during its formative years from 1914 to 1919. It specifically examines its institutional origins, administrative dynamics, funding mechanisms, facilities, student body conditions, and curriculum development. Method: This study employs a qualitative approach with a historical research method consisting of five systematic stages: topic selection, heuristics (data gathering), verification (source criticism), interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources utilized include colonial archives, official annual reports (Jaarverslag) of the Vereeniging Madioensche Kartinischool (1916–1919), and contemporary photographs, complemented by relevant secondary literature.  Findings: The school originated from a progressive local initiative under the "Wilotomo" association in 1913 before officially transforming into the Madioensche Kartinischool in 1914 with legal government recognition. Structurally, the management and teaching staff experienced high turnover due to health issues, marriages, and official transfers. Financially, operations were sustained through a diverse network of government subsidies, international aid from the Dutch Kartini Fonds, private donations from local sugar factories, and student tuition fees. Structurally, the school transitioned from a cramped, former prison building into a permanent facility with expanded classrooms by 1918. Student enrolment grew significantly from 50 in 1914 to 212 by 1919, despite experiencing a severe 41.5% absenteeism rate that forced a temporary closure in late 1918 due to staff shortages. The institution implemented a comprehensive curriculum featuring 14 subjects combining academic knowledge with domestic skills like batik and embroidery, alongside bi-monthly Islamic education supported by the Sarekat Islam, establishing the school as a vital cornerstone for regional women's emancipation.
