Abstract

ABSTRACT The contemporary decline in learning motivation demands a pedagogical approach that is more humanistic and spiritually grounded. In Islamic education, teachers function not only as transmitters of knowledge but also as motivators who foster students’ intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth. This study analyzes the teacher’s role as a motivator in Qur’anic education based on Al-Baghawi’s Ma‘ālim at-Tanzīl. Using qualitative library research and a thematic tafsir approach, the study examines Qur’anic verses related to motivation, wisdom, exemplary behavior, and character formation. The findings show that Qur’anic motivation in Al-Baghawi’s view is rooted in four core values: rahmah (compassion), hikmah (wisdom), ṣabr (patience), and uswah (exemplary conduct). Compassion builds emotional connection between teachers and students; wisdom guides the contextual selection of teaching methods; patience emphasizes continuous guidance; while exemplary conduct strengthens the internalization of moral values. These principles are highly compatible with modern motivational theories and offer a holistic pedagogical framework suitable for 21st-century education, including digital learning environments. The study concludes that Qur’anic education provides an integrated model that harmonizes academic achievement with character development.

Abstract

The character crisis among students is a serious challenge in national education, necessitating the strengthening of moral values ​​in learning. This study aims to analyze the concept of character formation in Tafsir At-Thabari and determine its relevance to Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning. The research method used a qualitative-descriptive approach with library research through thematic interpretation (maudhu'i) of the tarbiyah verses in Jāmi' al-Bayān 'an Ta'wīl Āy al-Qur'ān by Imam At-Thabari. The results show that Tafsir At-Thabari contains fundamental character education values, including faith and piety as a foundation, honesty, trustworthiness, responsibility, etiquette in seeking knowledge, and social awareness and justice. These values ​​have implications for achieving the PAI learning objective of developing students with noble character. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning needs to strengthen the interpretation and reflection of Qur'anic values ​​as a character education strategy, by integrating classical interpretations as a reference for values ​​in curriculum development and learning practices. Krisis karakter di kalangan pelajar menjadi tantangan serius dalam dunia pendidikan nasional, sehingga penguatan nilai-nilai moral dalam pembelajaran diperlukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis konsep pembentukan karakter dalam Tafsir At-Thabari dan menemukan relevansinya terhadap pembelajaran Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI). Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif-deskriptif dengan studi kepustakaan (library research) melalui metode tafsir tematik (maudhu'i) terhadap ayat-ayat tarbiyah dalam Jāmi' al-Bayān 'an Ta'wīl Āy al-Qur'ān karya Imam At-Thabari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Tafsir At-Thabari mengandung nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter fundamental meliputi keimanan dan takwa sebagai fondasi, kejujuran, amanah, tanggung jawab, adab dalam menuntut ilmu, serta kepedulian sosial dan keadilan. Nilai-nilai tersebut berimplikasi pada pencapaian tujuan pembelajaran PAI dalam membentuk peserta didik berakhlak mulia. Pembelajaran PAI perlu memperkuat dimensi tafsir dan refleksi nilai Qur'ani sebagai strategi pendidikan karakter, dengan mengintegrasikan tafsir klasik sebagai rujukan nilai dalam pengembangan kurikulum dan praktik pembelajaran.
