Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing illocutionary speech acts found in the Daebak Show Season 2, Episode 5, Part 1 podcast. The purpose of this research is to identify the types and functions of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s (1979) classification. The data were collected using a descriptive qualitative method by watching and transcribing the podcast episode, taking detailed notes, and classifying the utterances produced by the host, Eric Nam, and the guest, Jackson Wang. The analysis was conducted by categorizing each utterance according to its illocutionary force and communicative function within the conversational context. The findings reveal four types of illocutionary acts: assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives. Among these, assertive acts appeared as the most dominant type, indicating that the podcast discourse primarily functions as a medium for sharing information, opinions, and personal experiences. Declarative acts were not found in the data, as the podcast setting lacks the institutional authority required to perform such acts. This study contributes to pragmatic studies by highlighting the characteristics of illocutionary acts in podcast discourse.
