Abstract

This study investigates the usage errors of English articles (a, an, the, and zero article) in translation tasks among advanced Indonesian EFL learners. Utilizing a quantitative error analysis approach, the research involved 21 students from the English Education Department. Findings reveal that addition errors (64.4%) were the most prevalent, followed by substitution errors (33.3%) and omission errors (2.2%). Despite expectations, differences in accuracy between 5th and 7th semester students were minimal, indicating persistent first language interference in article usage. Students perceived English articles, particularly the zero article, as moderately difficult, primarily due to the absence of an article system in Indonesian. The study highlights the need for more comprehensive instruction focusing on the functional and phonetic aspects of articles to improve learners' grammatical accuracy in translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of regional dialects on the English pronunciation of Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students. With Indonesia’s rich linguistic diversity, local dialects often influence learners’ articulation of English sounds, particularly phonemes that are absent from their native languages, such as /?/, /ð/, and /v/. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to students from various regions, including speakers of Bataknese, Sundanese, and Javanese. The findings indicate consistent patterns of L1 interference, with dialectal features shaping learners’ pronunciation and affecting their intelligibility. While some students develop metacognitive strategies to overcome pronunciation challenges, others experience anxiety or reduced confidence due to social stigma. The study highlights the need for pronunciation pedagogy that promotes intelligibility while respecting students’ cultural identity, calling for localized and inclusive instructional practices in multilingual EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study discusses the importance of syntax in understanding English sentence structure, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a library research approach by reviewing linguistics textbooks and relevant journal articles. The findings indicate that syntax plays a crucial role in organizing sentence elements such as subjects, verbs, objects, phrases, and clauses, and in interpreting meaning accurately. Syntactic knowledge helps learners understand word order, recognize grammatical relationships, and comprehend both simple and complex sentence patterns. Moreover, syntactic awareness supports learners in producing grammatically correct and meaningful sentences in communication. Therefore, mastering syntax is essential for improving learners’ understanding and effective use of English sentence structure.
