Abstract

The moral development of students in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) is an essential aspect of Islamic education, especially amidst the challenges of moral degradation, digital disruption, and social changes that influence the value systems of the younger generation. As Islamic educational institutions based on values ​​and traditions, pesantren play a strategic role in shaping the character of students based on Islamic values ​​while also being adaptive to current developments. This article aims to examine the conceptual model of moral development of students in Islamic boarding schools and the strategy of character education based on Islamic values ​​that are relevant to the contemporary context. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach through literature study (library research). Data were obtained from reputable journal articles, classic and contemporary books, and Islamic education policy documents. The results of the study indicate that the moral development of students in Islamic boarding schools is implemented through an integrative and holistic model, including role models (uswah ḥasanah), daily habits and discipline, spiritual strengthening through worship and etiquette, and support from the pesantren environment and culture as a hidden curriculum. The strategy of character education based on Islamic values ​​is strengthened through the synergistic integration of moral values ​​in formal, non-formal, and informal education. The conclusion of this article confirms that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) possess structural and cultural advantages in sustainably fostering the moral character of their students. The Islamic boarding school moral development model contributes to the enrichment of Islamic character education theory and has the potential to serve as a conceptual reference for strengthening character education in a broader educational context.

Abstract

This research aims to examine and formulate the knowledge system of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as a model of Nusantara Islamic epistemology relevant to the development of contemporary Islamic education. This research employs a literature review method, examining recent scholarly works on Islamic boarding schools, classical Islamic epistemology, and modern Islamic educational theory. Through a critical analysis of this literature, the research identifies that the knowledge system of Islamic boarding schools is constructed through a combination of the scholarly authority of the kiai (Islamic scholars), the sanad tradition, the study of yellow books (kitab kuning), the practice of bahtsul masā'il (religious discourse), and the integration of three epistemological approaches: bayani (textual), burhani (rational-empirical), and irfani (spiritual-intuitive). These findings demonstrate that Islamic boarding schools function not only as centers for the transmission of classical Islamic knowledge but also as institutions capable of producing new knowledge products contextualized to the socio-religious dynamics of Indonesian society. The results confirm that Islamic boarding school epistemology makes a significant contribution to the construction of an Nusantara Islamic epistemology characterized by moderation, local wisdom, and adaptability to modernity. Theoretically, this research strengthens the position of Islamic boarding schools as epistemic sources distinct from Middle Eastern models of scholarship and modern-secular educational paradigms. Practically, this epistemological model can serve as a basis for developing a more relevant, integrative Islamic education curriculum oriented toward developing spiritual character and 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Islamic religious education and science from the perspective of the Qur'an and Hadith. The separation between these two fields of knowledge has led to an epistemological crisis that has weakened the spiritual dimension amidst modern technological advances. Using a library research approach and content analysis, this study explores the philosophical, theological, and practical foundations of this integration effort. The findings indicate that the Qur'an and Hadith consistently encourage humans to think critically, observe the universe, and connect empirical phenomena with the values ​​of monotheism. Therefore, the integration of religious education and science is imperative to realize a learning system that harmonizes intellectual and spiritual intelligence. The results of this study emphasize the urgency of developing a monotheism-based Islamic science curriculum as a response to the moral, ethical, and technological challenges of the contemporary era.
