Abstract

Kampung Jayengan di Kota Surakarta merupakan kawasan dengan karakter sosial-budaya dan ekonomi yang khas, terutama melalui aktivitas perdagangan dan kerajinan permata yang terorganisasi dalam Komunitas Jayengan Kampung Permata (JKP). Sejumlah penelitian terdahulu telah mengkaji Komunitas JKP dalam konteks pengembangan kawasan industri kreatif. Namun demikian, penelitian-penelitian tersebut masih menyisakan celah kajian, khususnya dalam memahami peran internal komunitas pedagang sebagai peran utama yang membangun kolaborasi, pertukaran informasi, serta meningkatkan ekonomi lokal dari dalam komunitas itu sendiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dinamika pembentukan, peran, dan kontribusi Komunitas JKP dalam memperkuat aktivitas ekonomi pedagang permata serta dampaknya terhadap masyarakat Kampung Jayengan di tengah tantangan globalisasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan lokasi penelitian di Kampung Jayengan, Kecamatan Serengan, Kota Surakarta. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam dengan 11 informan yang dipilih menggunakan teknik snowball sampling, observasi lapangan, serta studi dokumen. Analisis data dilakukan dengan model analisis interaktif yang meliputi tahap pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Komunitas JKP berperan signifikan dalam membangun kerja sama antar pedagang, memperlancar pertukaran informasi pasar dan kebutuhan konsumen, serta memperluas jaringan usaha baik di tingkat lokal, nasional, maupun internasional. Keberadaan komunitas ini juga berdampak pada masyarakat sekitar melalui penciptaan lapangan kerja baru, peningkatan perputaran ekonomi lokal, serta penguatan kegiatan sosial dan budaya. Di sisi lain, JKP menghadapi tantangan berupa minimnya regenerasi pengrajin muda, ketertinggalan desain produk, dan keterbatasan teknologi produksi. Meski demikian, komunitas ini mengembangkan berbagai strategi adaptif, seperti pemanfaatan platform digital, kolaborasi lintas sektor, dan penguatan identitas produk lokal.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of railways as a means of transporting agricultural products along the Solo–Semarang route during the period 1864–1940. The research method employed is the historical method, which consists of the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Research sources include colonial archives, NISM reports, photographic archives, as well as relevant books and articles. The results of the study indicate that the railway network played a significant role in the transportation of plantation products, particularly sugarcane, coffee, and tobacco. The integration of the rail network and the presence of lorries in plantation areas leading to processing factories demonstrate that the transportation of plantation products was already conducted systematically from the point of production. This means that before being transported to the main railway network, sugarcane was first transported via lorry routes connecting the plantations and processing factories. This indicates a connection between the railway network at the plantation level and the main railway network, thereby facilitating a smoother distribution process. Compared to traditional transport, railways were far more efficient, covering 110 km in about 3.5 hours, while traditional carts required up to 6 days. Railways also contributed to economic development, including the growth of markets, employment, and supporting businesses, and increased social mobility, although inequality persisted. In conclusion, railways functioned as the primary means of distribution for plantation products and played an important role in shaping economic and social change in the regions they served.
