One such use of technology is to make it easier for students to recognize the mathematical materials needed to solve problems in the field of chemistry. This study aims to explore how students utilize digital technology (especially ChatGPT and YouTube) to explore the use of matrix concepts in various chemistry topics, particularly in formulating reaction equations. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with 73 chemistry/chemistry education students who utilize ChatGPT and YouTube digital technology in completing assignments as the research subjects. The data collected consisted of assignment documentation, observations during learning activities, activity implementation questionnaires, and interviews. The results of data collection were analyzed using the stages in the Miles and Duberman model, which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that most students strongly agree with the use of ChatGPT and YouTube as tools for understanding concepts and their application in the context of chemistry. After conducting independent exploration, students find it easier to explain concepts and learn problem-solving procedures. However, there are several challenges that arise when they utilize digital technology, one of which is the difficulty in determining the validity of the information they obtain. This study recommends the systematic integration of digital technology in learning so that learning activities can be more focused.

Abstract

This study examines postgraduate students’ Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) task designs in relation to their conceptual knowledge of RME principles and characteristics. A qualitative case study was conducted involving four postgraduate students in a Mathematics Education program selected purposively. Data were collected through two assignments: a conceptual diagnostic task requiring students to identify RME principles and characteristics within a given learning sequence, and a task design assignment requiring them to develop an RME-based worksheet. Document analysis was used to examine the relationship between students’ conceptual understanding and the alignment of their task designs with RME principles. The findings indicate that students with comprehensive conceptual knowledge produced task designs consistently aligned with RME principles and characteristics. However, classroom implementation revealed that theoretically well-aligned task designs did not always lead to successful student learning. This finding indicates a gap between task design and its enactment, highlighting the importance of task clarity and students’ interpretative processes in RME-based learning. Those with partial understanding demonstrated misplaced or incomplete learning stages, while students with limited conceptual knowledge generated designs lacking essential RME components. This study contributes to the RME literature by demonstrating how variations in conceptual integration are reflected in systematic misalignments in task design, providing implications for RME-oriented teacher education at the postgraduate level, aligned with SDG 4 on quality education.

Abstract

There are several mistakes made by students in solving mathematical problems. Students' mistakes are also influenced by cognitive style. The purpose of this study is to describe the mistakes made by students with reflective cognitive styles in solving contextual problems. This study is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted at MA Mambaul Ulum Banjarejo. The material used in this study is linear programming. Data collection was carried out through written tests and interviews with each subject. The instruments used in this study were (1) the MFFT (Matching Familiar Figures Test) cognitive style test, (2) a linear programming problem-solving ability test, and (3) interview guidelines. There were two students with reflective cognitive styles as subjects in this study. The analysis of student errors was based on Newman's Theory. The results of this study are [1] both students with reflective cognitive styles made different mistakes, one student made conceptual errors, namely incorrect determination of inequality signs and transformations, and the other made procedural errors, namely the student was unable to continue working on the problem-solving process and also made mistakes in the transformation stage, process skills, and writing the final answer. [2] Both students with reflective cognitive styles also made the same errors; both made errors in the process skill stage and in the final answer writing stage.
