Abstract

Background: Kidney failure is a condition of gradual and progressive decline in kidney function over a long period of time. Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Indonesia was 0.38%, or approximately 3.8 per 1,000 population. Of these, approximately 60% of patients with kidney failure require dialysis therapy. CKD can limit daily activities and pose a risk of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, especially in individuals who have difficulty adapting to their condition. Anxiety can reduce quality of life, increase the risk of complications, and reduce the success of therapy. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of providing psychoeducational interventions for patients with stage 5 CKD in the Raudhah Ward of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Yogyakarta. Methods: This study used a case study design through the provision of nursing care. The sample in this study were patients with stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) with nursing problems related to anxiety in the Raudhah Ward of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Yogyakarta. Data were collected based on observations and interviews conducted over a one-day period on February 4, 2026. The instrument used was a palliative care assessment questionnaire from Aisyiyah University Yogyakarta, including the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS). Results: After psychoeducation and deep breathing techniques, the patient felt calmer and more relaxed, and felt supported by the presence of her family. Conclusion: Psychoeducation and deep breathing interventions for 1 × 8 hours were effective in reducing anxiety in patients with CKD stage 5 undergoing initial hemodialysis therapy.   Keywords: Anxiety; CKD Stage 5; Deep Breathing Technique; Psychoeducation.
