Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase marked by physical, emotional, and social changes, alongside new challenges brought about by the digital age. These changes often contribute to heightened stress and anxiety, particularly in academic settings. School, with its rigorous demands and social pressures, serves as a significant stressor. This community service project aimed to enhance the knowledge and practice of mindfulness among 10th-grade students at SMAN 3 Bone, specifically focusing on helping them cope with psychological and social pressures. Conducted on August 22, 2025, the project involved 33 female students navigating the transitional period of adolescence. The intervention consisted of an initial survey to assess baseline knowledge, followed by educational sessions on mindfulness theory and practical exercises, as well as group discussions and reflections. The results demonstrated a significant increase in students' mindfulness knowledge and skills, with the final average score reaching 80. Evaluation was based on observations throughout the activity and post-intervention assessments. The outcomes suggest that mindfulness education is an effective strategy for improving students’ ability to manage stress and anxiety. Despite the positive impact, challenges related to the implementation of mindfulness education within the school setting were identified, including the need for more structured integration into the curriculum and continuous support. Nevertheless, the findings highlight the potential of mindfulness practices as a valuable tool for supporting students' psychological well-being during adolescence, providing them with coping mechanisms for the pressures they face. Future recommendations include expanding the program to a broader student population and offering more regular mindfulness sessions to foster long-term benefits

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global public health issue, with its prevalence steadily increasing. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) reported that 11.7% of the population aged ≥15 years is affected by DM. DM is marked by high blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or action, leading to chronic complications. While conventional treatments such as insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs are effective, their long-term use can cause side effects, including hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal issues, and economic burdens. As a result, herbal-based complementary therapies are gaining attention due to their safety, accessibility, and alignment with Indonesian culture. Research suggests that certain herbs can lower blood glucose by increasing insulin secretion, improving insulin sensitivity, inhibiting glucose absorption, and offering antioxidant effects. Herbs like bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) have shown hypoglycemic activity. This literature review aims to explore the potential, mechanisms, preparation, and clinical evidence of using bay leaves and ginger for glycemic control. Findings indicate that both herbs improve insulin sensitivity, inhibit α-glucosidase, and exhibit antioxidant effects. However, further research, including large-scale clinical trials and multidisciplinary studies, is needed to validate these benefits and explore synergies with conventional therapies.

Abstract

Background: Emergency situations such as respiratory arrest and sudden cardiac arrest can occur at any time, including in schools. However, most students lack the knowledge and skills required for basic life support (BLS), which often hinders lifesaving efforts during the golden period. Globally, the success rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) remains low due to the lack of training bystanders, and in Indonesia, only a small percentage of sudden cardiac arrest victims receive BLS before medical personnel arrive. This situation is also reflected in South Sulawesi, including Bone Regency, where cases of sudden cardiac arrest in schools are rarely handled appropriately. High school students are a potential group for training due to their adequate cognitive and motor skills, but BLS training is not yet a routine part of the curriculum. Therefore, implementing BLS training at SMAN 3 Bone is relevant to improve students' knowledge, skills, and preparedness in dealing with emergencies, while simultaneously fostering a culture of emergency response and social solidarity within the school environment. Purpose: Improving student capacity through BLS skills training is a strategic effort to develop a young generation that is responsive to emergencies. Method: A community service activity was conducted on January 9, 2026, at SMAN 3 Bone, South Sulawesi, involving 29 students of grade XII IPA 2 who were purposively selected as respondents. Basic life support (BLS) skills training was provided through interactive lectures, demonstrations/simulations, and hands-on practice. Mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation were conducted to assess the success of the activity, its adherence to the plan, and its impact on improving students' knowledge and skills in performing CPR and first aid. Results: Of the 29 students participating in the training, 17 were male (58.6%) and 12 were female (41.4%). Participants gained knowledge about the concept of BLS, emergency theory, and vital components in emergencies. They also gained skills in performing a consciousness check, activating the emergency system, practicing airway opening and rescue breathing, and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Conclusion: Basic life support (BLS) education and training through lectures and simulations has proven effective in improving students' knowledge and skills related to emergency management in cases of respiratory/cardiac arrest. This activity contributes to students' knowledge and experience in BLS, enabling them to understand basic concepts and practice first aid skills with greater confidence after the training. Educational activities also benefit by fostering school preparedness for emergencies. Suggestion: BLS training should be implemented continuously and integrated into the high school curriculum, supported by collaboration between schools, healthcare professionals, and relevant agencies, to foster a culture of preparedness and social solidarity within the school environment in the face of emergencies. Keywords: Basic life support; Emergency; Health education; Student skills; Training Pendahuluan: Kejadian kegawatdaruratan seperti henti napas dan henti jantung mendadak dapat terjadi kapan saja, termasuk di lingkungan sekolah, namun sebagian besar siswa belum memiliki pengetahuan maupun keterampilan bantuan hidup dasar (BHD) yang sesuai standar sehingga upaya penyelamatan jiwa pada golden period sering terhambat.

Abstract

Background: Access to emergency care in rural and remote areas is often constrained by long travel distances, a shortage of specialist personnel, and limited supporting facilities, creating a risk of delayed treatment during the critical golden hour. Telemedicine has been proposed as a strategy to bridge this gap through remote consultation, clinical decision support, and early triage. This narrative systematic review aims to summarize current evidence on the effectiveness of telemedicine in rural emergency care services. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Garuda databases using combinations of keywords related to telemedicine, telehealth, emergency care, and rural settings for publications from 2019-2026, supplemented by a review of telemedicine policy in Indonesia. Fourteen primary sources meeting the relevance criteria were thematically synthesized. The review found that telemedicine contributes to improved diagnostic accuracy, faster response times, reduced unnecessary patient referrals or transfers, and higher patient and provider satisfaction, although benefits were more consistent for non-critical cases than for high-acuity cases requiring immediate hands-on intervention. Cost-effectiveness varied depending on the scale of implementation and available infrastructure. In Indonesia, telemedicine implementation in underdeveloped, border, and island regions (DTPK) shows similar potential but continues to face internet connectivity constraints, regulatory readiness gaps, and a shortage of trained human resources. This review concludes that telemedicine is effective as a complement to, not a replacement for, conventional emergency care in rural areas, and its success depends on infrastructure investment, standardized clinical protocols, and strengthened local healthcare workforce capacity. Abstract

The increasing prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) requires comprehensive management that integrates pharmacological therapy with lifestyle modification and physical activity. Diabetes exercise is a complementary intervention that can improve glucose utilization, blood circulation, physical fitness, and glycemic control when performed regularly. However, many individuals with DM and those at risk of developing DM still have limited knowledge, motivation, and skills to perform diabetes exercise correctly and consistently. This community service program aimed to provide education and training on diabetes management and introduce safe, correct, and sustainable diabetes exercise to community members at the Cina Community Health Center, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. The program involved 38 participants, consisting of 20 individuals with DM and 18 individuals in the high-risk group. The activities were conducted through three stages: planning and preparation, training implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. Interactive lectures, demonstrations, direct practice, pre-tests, and post-tests were used to assess participants’ knowledge and skills. The results showed an improvement in participants’ understanding of diabetes, the benefits of diabetes exercise, and the correct exercise movements, accompanied by improved ability to practice the movements independently. Although some participants, particularly older adults, experienced difficulties memorizing the exercise movements, they demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the activities. An instructional diabetes exercise video was also distributed through the participants’ social media group to support independent practice at home. The program is expected to encourage regular physical activity, improve healthy lifestyle behaviors, strengthen participants’ self-management skills, and support the establishment of sustainable community-based diabetes exercise groups.
