Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively examine the characteristics and methodology of Musnad Imam Syafi'i, the work of Sheikh Muhammad 'Abid al-Sindi, which compiles the basic hadiths of Imam Syafi'i's legal arguments. This study was conducted to answer the academic need to understand the authenticity, structure, and role of the book in the development of hadith science in the 2nd century Hijriah. This study uses a qualitative, codicological and historical-descriptive approach. Primary data comes from the modern tahqiq edition of Musnad Imam Syafi'i, while secondary data are obtained from classical works such as Tarikh Baghdad (al-Khatib), Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' (al-Dzahabi), and Tahdzib al-Asma' wa al-Lughat (al-Nawawi). Data collection techniques were carried out through documentary studies and text analysis, while data analysis was carried out by analyzing the content of sanad-matan criticism, as well as verification of other works of Imam Syafi'i such as al-Umm. It was found that the Musnad of Imam Shafi'i was compiled based on the companions of the narrators, and focused on the ahadith al-ahkam. The methodology of this book demonstrates a balance between the authenticity of the sanad and legal rationality, emphasizing Imam Shafi'i's role as a link between the early tradition of hadith transmission and the textual and rational Islamic legal system. This study confirms the significance of the Musnad of Imam Shafi'i in the study of hadith and the Shafi'i school of thought, and offers a new approach by combining the study of codicology and hadith criticism to contribute to the study of methodology and the preservation of classical Islamic treasures.

Abstract

Thi s study aims to examine comprehensively Kitāb al-Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn by al-Ḥākim al-Naysābūrī (d. 405 H), one of the most significant works in the hadith corpus, composed with the purpose of completing authentic traditions that were not included in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. The research seeks to explore the background of the book’s compilation, the author’s scholarly profile, al-Ḥākim’s methodology in collecting and evaluating hadiths, as well as the responses of later scholars concerning the authenticity and quality of the narrations contained within. This study employs a qualitative method using a descriptive-analytical approach through a library-based examination of primary and secondary sources, including al-Mustadrak, Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak by al-Dhahabī, and critical commentaries from both classical and contemporary hadith scholars. The findings indicate that although al-Ḥākim claimed that all hadiths in al-Mustadrak meet the authenticity criteria applied by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, many narrations within the collection have been criticized for their weak chains of transmission and problematic textual content. Nevertheless, the book holds substantial value in hadith studies, particularly as a comparative reference and a critical resource within the classical and modern scholarly traditions. Thus, al-Mustadrak remains an essential work for understanding the dynamics of hadith authenticity, transmission, and criticism throughout Islamic intellectual history.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of hadith criticism among Western scholars by highlighting its challenges and opportunities for contemporary Islamic studies. This research discusses how early Western scholars such as Ignaz Goldziher and Joseph Schacht viewed hadith not as divine revelation but as a socio-political construction that emerged after the Prophet’s era, thus casting doubt on its authenticity and authority. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The primary sources consist of Western scholars’ works on hadith and the responses of contemporary Muslim scholars to them. The analysis is conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, describing the views of the Orientalists and analyzing their implications for modern hadith studies. Although Western hadith criticism raises doubts about the sources of Islamic law, it also provides significant opportunities for the development of contemporary hadith studies. Such criticism encourages Muslim scholars to strengthen classical methodologies with modern scientific approaches and opens space for cross-traditional academic dialogue. Through the integration of classical isnād criticism methods and modern historical approaches—as undertaken by contemporary Muslim scholars such as Jonathan A.C. Brown and Muhammad Mustafa al-A‘zami—hadith studies can now develop in a more comprehensive, objective, and contextual manner. Therefore, Western hadith criticism is not only a challenge to Islamic authority but also a means of reflection and methodological reinforcement in global hadith scholarship.

Abstract

Globalization has brought significant changes in various aspects of life, including religious understanding and practice. This study discusses the position and role of Hadith in facing the challenges and opportunities arising from the current of globalization. Through a qualitative approach with literature analysis, this research identifies that the context of Hadith in the globalization era is related to two aspects: the development of Hadith studies from time to time up to the current development through digital technology and social media, and its application in facing the era of globalization. The results of the study indicate that to deal with these challenges and opportunities, the critical study approach to understanding Hadith through the utilization of technology must refer wisely and prudently to the methodological concepts formulated by previous scholars (ulama terdahulu) in order to support the strengthening of Hadith's authenticity. Furthermore, Hadith, with the development of its studies and applications exemplified by the ulama mutaqaddimin (earlier scholars) and muta'akhkhirīn (later scholars), remains always relevant to the progress of the times.
