Abstract

The Teacher Professional Education Program is a training initiative designed for in-service teachers, established by the Indonesian government to enhance teachers' competencies, pedagogical skills, and teaching abilities. The government of Indonesia has undertaken educational reforms aimed at elevating teachers' proficiencies, with a specific focus on their professional, social, individual, and pedagogic aptitudes. The enactment of the Teacher and Lecturer Law No. 14 in 2005 further underscores the government's commitment to fostering professionalism and excellence among educators through programs like the Professional Education Program (PEP) and other developmental endeavours. This study delved into the impact of the Professional Education Program on teachers' pedagogical competence. The study encompassed 47 teachers who participated in the program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar during the 2020-2021 academic year, selected purposively for the research. Employing a descriptive design, the research employed a questionnaire to gauge the influence of the Professional Education Program, particularly on the pedagogical competence of in-service English teachers. The findings of the research revealed that the Professional Education Program significantly benefits in-service teachers, aiding them in augmenting their pedagogical knowledge and fortifying their capabilities as English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors. Emphasizing the significance of continuous professional development for in-service teachers, the study underscores the importance of programs like these. As a result, it can be affirmed that professional education programs tailored for in-service teachers wield a noteworthy impact in enhancing pedagogical competence within the educational landscape of Indonesia.
