Abstract

Religious moderation is a fundamental value that needs to be internalized from early childhood to foster tolerant, fair, and inclusive character development. However, the implementation of religious moderation in early childhood education, particularly in Raudhatul Athfal (Islamic early childhood institutions), remains largely normative and is rarely supported by operational and systematic instructional tools. This study aims to develop a scientific approach–based children’s worksheet (Lembar Kerja Anak/LKA) model as a medium for internalizing religious moderation values in Raudhatul Athfal. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) design, encompassing needs analysis, product design, development, expert validation, limited field testing, and product revision. The research subjects involved early childhood education experts, instructional design experts, religious moderation experts, and Raudhatul Athfal teachers as users. Data were collected through validation questionnaires, practicality questionnaires, and classroom observations, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results indicate that the developed scientific approach–based LKA is categorized as highly valid in terms of content relevance, instructional design, and religious moderation integration, and highly practical for classroom implementation. The use of the LKA effectively facilitated the internalization of religious moderation values, including tolerance, cooperation, fairness, and respect for diversity, through child-centered learning activities and structured social interaction. These findings demonstrate that the scientific approach is not only effective in enhancing children’s cognitive development but also serves as a powerful pedagogical vehicle for character and religious value internalization when systematically embedded in instructional materials. This study contributes to early childhood education research by offering an applicable and context-sensitive scientific worksheet model that supports the strengthening of religious moderation education in Islamic early childhood settings.

This type of research is a field research with a qualitative approach which is a research with natural situations using data collection techniques of observation, interviews, documentation, and FGDs. As the data obtained by the researchers that the fostering of tolerance attitude carried out by asatidz at An-Najah Islamic Boarding School, Tanjungrejo Village, Jekulo District, Kudus Regency is as follows: 1) Integrated in every book study which is routinely carried out every time after the maktubah prayer, especially when bandongan is active, namely bakda subuh, bakda magrib and bakda 'isyak; 2) Integrated in extra activities. namely: a) study of the book Riyadh ash-Shalihin which involves community members every Tuesday night; b) khithobah activities; c) deliberation activities; d) Qur'an tadarus activities; and e) incidental activities organized by local community members; 3) Incidental coaching activities. Abstract

This study aims to develop a Child Worksheet (LKA) based on a scientific approach that contains values of religious moderation for Raudhatul Athfal (RA). The urgency of this study stems from the need to strengthen character education from an early age in a multicultural society, as well as the limited availability of early childhood education teaching materials that are able to integrate cognitive, affective, and social aspects in a balanced manner. The research used the Education Design Research (EDR) method with stages of analysis and exploration, design and construction, as well as evaluation and reflection. The research subjects involved teachers and RA children in Jekulo District, Kudus Regency. Data collection techniques included literature studies, interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that the developed LKA met the criteria of didactic, constructive, and technical feasibility; was attractive to children; and was effective in supporting the understanding of learning concepts and the internalization of religious moderation values. The systematic integration of the scientific approach with indicators of religious moderation proved to help teachers create active, meaningful, and character-building learning. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an integrative-operational Islamic Early Childhood Education (PAUD) Child Worksheet (LKA) design model, which directly links the stages of the scientific approach (observing, questioning, trying, reasoning, and communicating) with indicators of religious moderation that have been simplified in accordance with the developmental characteristics of early childhood. Unlike previous studies that tended to place character values or religious moderation as normative or thematic content, this study offers an activity-based implementative framework that can be directly used by RA teachers in their daily teaching practices. Thus, the novelty of this research lies not only in the content of values, but also in the pedagogical mechanisms and instructional design of LKA that have been empirically tested in RA units. This research contributes to the development of character-based early childhood education teaching materials and provides practical implications for RA educators.

Abstract

Although pesantren have long been recognized for fostering religious character, limited research has explained how Islamic values, Salaf scholarship, and nationalism are simultaneously integrated into a coherent educational model for character formation. This study addresses this gap by examining the integration process at Pesantren An-Nawawi Berjan, Purworejo. Employing a qualitative case study, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with kiai, ustaz, administrators, and santri, and document analysis, and were analyzed using an interactive model with triangulation and member checking to ensure credibility. The findings reveal that the three value systems are integrated through an interconnected framework comprising curriculum, daily religious practices, Salaf learning traditions (bandongan and sorogan), exemplary leadership of the kiai, pesantren culture, and civic-oriented activities, producing santri who demonstrate strong religiosity, intellectual humility, critical reasoning, moderation, and national commitment. These findings indicate that value integration operates as a holistic educational ecosystem rather than as separate instructional components, extending previous studies that have predominantly examined each dimension independently. Overall, the study demonstrates that sustainable character education in pesantren depends on the dynamic interaction between religious formation, classical Islamic scholarship, and civic engagement. The findings provide a practical framework for strengthening character education in Islamic institutions while contributing a holistic model of value integration that advances contemporary scholarship on Islamic education and pesantren studies.

Abstract

Pesantren has a strategic role in building the national spirit in Indonesia, especially in forming a generation with morals and national insight. Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, one of the leading pesantren, implements an education system that integrates Islamic and national values in every aspect of learning. This study aims to analyse how the education system in Gontor shapes the national spirit of santri through curriculum, pesantren culture, and leadership activities. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with pesantren caregivers, teachers, and santri, and document analysis related to the curriculum and values taught in Gontor. Data analysis was conducted using triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the findings. The results show that Gontor instills nationalism through various methods, such as character-based learning, discipline, and independence education, and extracurricular activities that foster a sense of unity and nationalism. The santri leadership system also plays an important role in shaping social responsibility and love for the country. In addition, the integration of Islamic values and nationalism in the curriculum teaches santri about the importance of maintaining the integrity of the nation within the Islamic frame. Thus, education in Gontor can be a model in building a generation that has a strong religious understanding and a high national spirit. Pesantren can contribute to strengthening national unity through value-based education. These findings provide a practical framework for integrating civic and religious education and contribute theoretically to the discourse on nationalism within Islamic educational contexts.
