Abstract

Basic literacy, particularly early reading and writing, is a crucial competency for the academic development of early grade students. Initial observations at an elementary school in Karawang Regency showed that literacy learning was still conventional, with minimal digital media, and not fully aligned with student characteristics. This study aimed to develop and test teaching materials based on the Synthetic Structural Analysis (SAS) Model, supported by the Canva application, to improve students' early reading and writing skills. Development was conducted using a simplified Borg & Gall Research and Development (R&D) method, including needs analysis, initial product design, expert validation, revision, limited trials, and extensive trials. Validation results showed that all components of the model, teaching materials, student worksheets (LKPD), and media were in the very feasible category (84–90%). The trial on 30 students showed a significant increase in reading and writing skills, with a moderate N-gain and a significant paired sample t-test (p < 0.001). Interviews revealed student and teacher challenges in adapting to digital media, but student enthusiasm and engagement were high. The findings confirm that the Canva-assisted SAS model is effective, feasible, and practically applicable to improve early literacy in elementary schools.
