Pengembangan ini ia jabarkan dalam bukunya yakni Interpreting the Qur'an: Towards a Contemporary Approach. Setelah menulis buku ini, ia melakukan penyempurnaan kembali dengan bukunya Reading the Quran in the 21th century. In the twenty-first-century, Qur’anic interpretation, contextualizing the Qur’an in relation to contemporary Muslim challenges has become a central concern. Abdullah Saeed offers a significant contribution through his theory of contextual hermeneutics, which develops Fazlur Rahman’s double movement approach. Saeed introduces an additional element, namely the contextual connector which contains a hierarchy of values, to bridge the world of the text and the world of the interpreter. This development is elaborated in his book Interpreting the Qur'an: Towards a Contemporary Approach, and later refined in Reading the Qur'an in the 21st Century. This study aims to explore the conceptual framework of Abdullah Saeed’s contextual hermeneutical thought based on the epistemology of Qur’anic interpretation that he formulates. The findings indicate that Saeed introduces several key developments, including refined stages of interpretation, the elaboration of ideal moral values, and a hierarchy of values derived from Fazlur Rahman’s double movement theory. These findings illustrate the epistemology of contextual Qur’anic interpretation, encompassing the sources of knowledge, methodological approaches, and criteria of interpretive validity employed by Abdullah Saeed in interpreting the Qur’an.
