Abstract

This article analyzes how verbal language functions as a cultural practice in the Canary Bird Community "Konco Ngopi" in Ciledug, Tangerang, by examining the formation of distinctive terms, social functions, and interaction patterns both inside and outside the gantang arena. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Speech Codes Theory and communication ethnography to interpret canary jargon not merely as a variation of language, but as a system of meaning that shapes identity, competition ethics, and social relations. Previous studies have generally been limited to descriptions of terms or different communities without linking speech codes to the competition space and communication network structure. Data was obtained through participant observation, in depth interviews, and documentation of cage bird activitiesand informal meetings (ngopi). Results indicate that terms influenced by Javanese, Sundanese, and Betawi languages function as internal codes for technical coordination, affirming membership boundaries, and strengthening solidarity. Community interactions are also supported by an egalitarian, (open channel) communication network pattern that facilitates continuous knowledge exchange.
