Abstract

Background: The study of tropical laboratory research to support sustainability issues is very urgent to ensure that efforts to conserve and utilize natural resources in tropical areas can be carried out effectively and sustainably. Objectives: This SLR focuses on analyzing research trends in relation to “tropical laboratory research to support sustainability issues”. Methods: This SLR will provide a relatively complete analysis so that it can inspire research activities for researchers, especially in countries that do not yet have a high interest in this aspect. This investigation constitutes a SLR to systematically identify, assess, and analyze all specific research inquiries, topics, or areas. The sequence of inclusion and exclusion was using PRISMA. Data simulation uses "Analyze search results" which is available on the Scopus system. To enrich data and analysis, the data was exported to *CSV format (for visualizing data process with VOSviewer and RStudio) and *RIS (for synchronized with Mendeley). The final result of this process was 17 articles that met the criteria and were worthy of analysis. Results: We discuss the findings related to Tropical Laboratory Research to Support Sustainability Issues based on the established research questions. Conclusion: Publications related to tropical laboratory research for sustainability have shown significant fluctuations since 2004, with the majority of publications coming from the United States. While there is potential for future growth, it is important to increase funding support and collaboration between countries to make this research more effective in supporting sustainability.

Abstract

Background: The increasing environmental burden of scientific laboratories has prompted a critical need to adopt sustainable practices. Laboratories consume substantial amounts of energy and water and generate hazardous and plastic waste, making them significant contributors to environmental degradation. Objectives: This study aims to explore the urgency, key themes, and strategic contributions of green laboratories to sustainability. Methods: Using a review approach supported by Scopus AI, the study collected and analyzed peer-reviewed data through natural language and keyword-based queries, combined with thematic mapping. Results: Key findings reveal four dominant themes: real-world labs, green chemistry, sustainability in higher education, and green technological innovation. These green lab practices offer benefits including reduced environmental footprint, cost savings, enhanced safety, and alignment with sustainability goals. However, challenges such as financial constraints and resistance to change must be addressed through stakeholder engagement and education. Conclusion: The study concludes that green laboratories play a vital role in sustainability transitions by bridging innovation, education, and environmental responsibility. This review offers a framework for future research and institutional efforts aimed at accelerating green lab adoption worldwide.

Abstract

Background: Technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) is commonly measured using self-report questionnaires, although such scores may not fully represent prospective teachers’ demonstrated capacity to integrate technology, pedagogy, and biology content. Objective: This study examined the effects of gender, economic support, and grade point averages (GPAs) in content, pedagogy, and technology courses on prospective biology teachers’ TPACK and compared results obtained from self-report and performance-based assessment. Methods: A quantitative correlational design involved 100 biology education students from the 2021–2023 cohorts at Universitas Negeri Padang, selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. TPACK was measured using a 28-item questionnaire and an integrated performance-based assessment comprising 13 CoRe prompts and 11 PaP-eRs prompts. Multiple linear regression was conducted separately for each assessment method, and a paired-samples t-test compared the two scores. Results: The questionnaire score (M = 83.57, SD = 3.26) was significantly higher than the CoRe–PaP-eRs score (M = 67.11, SD = 4.01), with a mean difference of 16.46 points, t(99) = 37.78, p < .001. For the questionnaire, economic support and technology-course GPA were significant predictors. For CoRe–PaP-eRs, economic support, pedagogy-course GPA, and technology-course GPA were significant predictors, whereas gender and content-course GPA were not significant in either model. Conclusion: Self-reported TPACK and demonstrated TPACK yield systematically different profiles. Combining both methods provides a more defensible diagnosis of prospective teachers perceived competence and their ability to enact integrated knowledge in instructional planning.
