Abstract

Digitalization has become a key driver in the transformation of the tourism industry, particularly in tourism destination marketing strategies. The development of digital technologies such as social media, online platforms, mobile applications, and smart tourism technologies has changed the way tourism destinations are promoted and managed. This study aims to examine the role of digitalization in tourism destination marketing through a literature review approach. The research method used in this study is a literature review, analyzing various scientific articles, research reports, and academic publications published between 2020 and 2024. The literature was collected through searches in academic databases using keywords related to digital tourism, destination marketing, and smart tourism. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis and thematic synthesis to identify trends, strategies, and challenges in the implementation of digitalization in tourism destination marketing. The results indicate that digitalization plays a significant role in enhancing the effectiveness of destination promotion, expanding tourism market reach, and strengthening destination image and competitiveness. Social media platforms, immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, and big data utilization have become important components of digital tourism marketing strategies. However, the implementation of digitalization also faces several challenges, including limited digital literacy, technological infrastructure gaps, and data security concerns. Therefore, collaboration among governments, tourism industry stakeholders, local communities, and educational institutions is essential to support the development of a sustainable digital tourism ecosystem.

Abstract

The transformation of tourism destinations in the era of the creative economy has become an important topic in contemporary tourism studies. Global tourism development is increasingly influenced by globalization, technological innovation, and changes in tourist preferences toward more meaningful travel experiences. This study aims to examine how tourism destinations transform in response to these changes through a literature review approach. Relevant academic publications from 2018–2023 were collected from major databases and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The findings indicate that tourism destination transformation is driven by three major factors: the dynamics of globalization and global tourism networks, the shift from mass tourism to experience-based tourism, and the integration of creative economy activities into tourism development. The creative economy plays a crucial role in strengthening destination competitiveness through the development of innovative tourism products, cultural branding, and enhanced visitor experiences. Furthermore, collaboration among stakeholders—including local communities, government institutions, and tourism businesses—is essential to support sustainable tourism development. The study concludes that integrating creativity, culture, and innovation into tourism strategies can enhance the attractiveness and sustainability of destinations in the global tourism market.

Abstract

Tourism destination competitiveness has become an important concept in understanding how destinations attract tourists, generate economic benefits, and sustain long-term tourism development in an increasingly competitive global tourism market. This study aims to analyze the conceptual framework and determinant factors influencing tourism destination competitiveness through a literature review approach. Relevant academic publications published between 2018 and 2023 were reviewed to identify key theoretical perspectives and empirical findings related to destination competitiveness. The results indicate that tourism destination competitiveness is a multidimensional construct influenced by several interrelated factors, including core tourism resources and attractions, infrastructure and accessibility, digital technology and innovation, and governance and policy frameworks. Natural and cultural attractions serve as the fundamental drivers that attract tourists, while infrastructure and accessibility facilitate mobility and improve visitor experiences. Furthermore, digital technologies play an increasingly important role in enhancing destination marketing, tourism services, and data-driven decision-making. Effective governance and collaborative stakeholder engagement are also essential for ensuring sustainable tourism development and long-term competitiveness. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of integrated strategies combining resource management, infrastructure development, technological innovation, and policy support to strengthen the competitiveness of tourism destinations.
