Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' reading and writing literacy skills in the Indonesian language subject for Grade IV at SD Negeri 08 Payaraman. Reading and writing literacy is one of the essential basic competencies that supports students’ academic success across various subjects. This research employs a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including direct observation of classroom activities and structured interviews with the principal, Grade IV teacher, and several students. The findings indicate that literacy activities have been routinely implemented and are an integral part of the school’s learning process. Most students have demonstrated adequate reading comprehension and structured writing skills. The school provides supporting facilities such as a library and reading corner, although student utilization still needs to be improved. The main challenges students face in literacy include limited vocabulary, low reading interest, and difficulty in understanding implied meanings in texts. Moreover, the family environment plays a crucial role in shaping students’ reading and writing habits at home.Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the literacy skills of Grade IV students are generally quite good. However, more adaptive and collaborative learning strategies, along with active parental involvement, are needed to address the difficulties experienced by some students. This study recommends strengthening the literacy environment both at school and at home as an effort to improve students’ overall literacy skills.
