Abstract

This study aims to conduct spatial analysis and mapping of flood hazard zoning in Gorontalo City using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Indonesia, as a “disaster supermarket,” faces floods as the most dominant meteorological and hydrological threat. Gorontalo City has been recorded as highly affected; as of July 2024, 4,686 houses and 41,164 residents were impacted by flooding, with Biawu Subdistrict identified as the most severely affected area. The research method employs spatial analysis of secondary data using overlay techniques on variables including administrative boundaries, soil types, slope gradient, and rainfall, all in shapefile (SHP) format. Data sources are integrated from BNPB’s InaRISK and Google Satellite imagery. The results indicate that the majority of Gorontalo City falls within a high-risk zone (red), concentrated in the lowland central to northern areas encompassing Kota Tengah, Kota Selatan, Kota Timur, Dungingi, and Sipatana Districts. This high level of vulnerability is driven by a combination of flat topography, low soil infiltration capacity, and high rainfall. The resulting map serves as a strategic scientific instrument for the government in formulating adaptive mitigation and spatial planning policies to minimize future disaster risks.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems provide critical ecological services, support coastal livelihoods, and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation through their blue carbon storage capacity. Despite their importance, many mangrove areas in Indonesia continue to face increasing pressures from land-use conversion, resource exploitation, environmental degradation, and climate-related threats. Community-based ecotourism has emerged as a promising strategy for balancing ecosystem conservation and local economic development; however, effective management requires a comprehensive understanding of internal capacities and external challenges affecting mangrove sustainability. This study aims to evaluate the strategic potential of mangrove ecosystem conservation and management in Pohuwato Regency, Indonesia, to support sustainable community-based ecotourism development. Data were collected through field observations, questionnaires, and stakeholder assessments and analyzed using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) supported by IFAS and EFAS matrices. The results revealed an IFAS score of 2.45 and an EFAS score of 2.53, producing strategic coordinates of X = 1.05 and Y = 0.61. These values position the study area within Quadrant I of the SWOT matrix, indicating a strong capacity to pursue an aggressive development strategy by leveraging existing strengths and opportunities. High ecotourism potential, mangrove biodiversity, institutional collaboration opportunities, and conservation funding availability emerged as the most influential factors supporting future development. The study highlights that strengthening community participation, enhancing ecotourism infrastructure, and promoting collaborative governance are essential for achieving long-term coastal sustainability. These findings contribute to the growing discourse on integrating mangrove conservation and ecotourism as a pathway toward resilient coastal development and sustainable blue economy initiatives in tropical regions.

Abstract

Scientific publication is an essential research output that serves as a medium for disseminating research findings while strengthening academic culture in higher education. However, many students still have limited understanding of the publication process, particularly in preparing journal articles, selecting appropriate journals, understanding publication ethics, and submitting manuscripts through the Open Journal System (OJS). This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the understanding of scientific publication among students of the Geography Study Program, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, as the final output of their research. The program was conducted through lectures, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and the sharing of publication experiences. Evaluation was carried out through observation of participants' engagement during the activity and feedback collected at the end of the session. The results showed that participants developed a better understanding of scientific article structure, publication ethics, journal selection strategies, reference management applications, and manuscript submission through OJS. This activity is expected to improve students' readiness to publish their research findings and foster a stronger culture of scientific publication within the university.
