Abstract

ABSTRACTThematic hadith represents one of the essential approaches in hadith studies, aiming to present a comprehensive understanding by compiling narrations according to specific themes. This paper seeks to illustrate the general design of both classical and contemporary thematic hadith studies in responding to the dynamics and needs of hadith scholarship from the era of codification to the contemporary period. Employing a qualitative method based on library research, this study examines classical and contemporary literature on thematic hadith. The findings reveal that the characteristics of hadith compilation vary across different periods. During the era of the Companions, compilation was primarily for personal documentation. In the era of official codification, in addition to focusing on the authenticity of the isnād, the dominant motivation for collecting hadith was practical needs within the framework of fiqh, which were categorized into multi-themed and mono-themed works. In contrast, the contemporary period is more oriented toward addressing contemporary phenomena. Moreover, contemporary thematic studies continue to evolve through the adoption of new approaches and are less rigidly boundto in-depth isnād analysis as in earlier periods. Nonetheless, the main conclusion of this study highlights that thematic hadith studies not only serve as an instrument for verifying and classifying various narrations but also function as a means to develop a more comprehensive conceptual framework with one primary goal: ensuring that the Prophet’s hadiths remain relevant and applicable across time and circumstance. Keywords: Thematic Hadith, Classical, Contemporary. Abstract

This article examines foreign cultures from the perspective of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), focusing on how Muslims should respond to the challenges posed by foreign cultural influences that contradict the teachings of the Prophet. The discussion employs a thematic-analytical approach by inventorying and classifying relevant hadiths related to the research focus, which are then described and interpreted through textual and contextual analysis. Overall, this study finds that the Prophet (peace be upon him) issued strong warnings against inclinations toward or the imitation of foreign cultures that conflict with Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah) and that may potentially undermine Islamic values, identity, and religious integrity. These hadiths emphasize the importance of avoiding the negative influences of traditions that often originate from outside the Islamic values. In responding to foreign cultural influences, Muslims are encouraged to adopt the hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as both a normative filter and a foundational guide for engaging with foreign cultures, so as to remain firmly committed to Islamic values, such as avoiding tashabbuh (imitation of non-Islamic practices), rejecting excessive materialism, maintaining ethical conduct, and preserving religious integrity. This study underscores the importance of safeguarding Islamic identity amid the currents of globalization that bring various deviant ideological and cultural influences. Nevertheless, Muslims may remain open to innovation without compromising Islamic values. This research contributes to the enrichment of thematic hadith studies, particularly in the context of the relationship between Islam and global culture, and reaffirms the role of hadith as a normative guide in shaping Muslim religious attitudes in the face of the complexities of modern cultural challenges.

Abstract

This study examines how the jawāmiʿ al-kalim character of hadiths on companionship can be interpreted in relation to the contemporary concept of friendship circles. Rather than treating prophetic narrations on friendship as isolated moral instructions, this research approaches them as an interconnected corpus oriented toward a shared waḥdah al-ghāyah (unity of purpose). Employing a thematic method of hadith analysis, the study collects and examines narrations related to companionship from classical sources accessed through digital compilations such as Maktabah Shāmilah and Mausūʿah al-Ḥadīthiyyah. The analysis identifies seventeen hadiths that collectively articulate a patterned ethical framework for social relations. These narrations reveal several relational dimensions, including the definition and urgency of companionship, the vision and moral purpose of friendship, the ethical principles regulating interaction, and the positive and negative social consequences of association. The findings suggest that the concise formulations of hadith function as relational signifiers that structure the ideals and boundaries of social interaction. When read as a semantic network, these traditions construct a moral grammar of companionship that remains relevant for interpreting the dynamics of contemporary friendship circles.
